Golf Activity Flawed with FW3.40

There have been several flaws with the Golf Activity on the VA3 since the 2.70 update and still after numerous support emails sent to Garmin we are now onto FW 3.40 with the same issues.

- Golf activity is not recording GPS information and no map data is being recorded on the Connect app or website.
- After a round of approx. 8km distance walked it shows a 0km distance, 0 elevation gained & 0 avg speed and in turn doesn't count towards intensity minutes when it used to.
- Rounds random exit after a few holes or sometime close to an end of round.
- have had the distance to green lock up and freeze on 257 to green when i am standing on the green, can change it or exiting it without exiting the round and losing the last few holes.

I originally reported this issue in December last year and was told to wait for the next upgrade for a fix.

I originally brought this to play golf with and it cant even do that at the minute ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1321987.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1321988.jpg
  • anyone else struggling with the accuracy of the GPS? I am finding it off by up to 20 yards or more on par 3's (I have a laser rangefinder) and yesterday I played where we had GPS in the cart and on some holes there was a a 40 yard difference on the tee (and 10-20 on approach shots) between the cart gps and the VA3. My rangefinder is accurate to a yard and was much closer to the cart gps than then VA3. I do have it set in yards, not meters so that's not it, unless there is a bug. Any ideas?
  • I don't get the reason why the golf app is so flawed, surely they could have just ported the golf app from one of their many other dedicated golf watches, which work well.

I am having a similar problem. The distances are always off by about 10% (the watch always reads 10% less than actual). It seems like the watch shows the distance in metres even though I have set golf distance to yards. I do have everything else set to metric though. Next time I play I will try setting everything to imperial and see if that fixes it, although I shouldn't have to do that.
  • I have a question. Are you all using the va3, the golf app on your mobile phone, or both to record your golf activity?

I played a round on 5/28, recording the round using both my va3 and the golf app on my iPhone 6S+. I didn't pay attention to the iOS app at all until the round was finished and I only used the app on my va3 for distance tracking (I didn't keep score) since I was playing in a best ball tournament. The result was a recorded activity in GCM, but with only time calories and heart rate recorded. No mileage, no steps. For reference, one person that was also playing said her Fitbit recorded 9000 steps.

I played another round yesterday (only 9 holes) while only using the va3 to track the round. I recorded my score, tracked my fairways hit, and putts. Everything seemed to work fine (still not 100% sure how autoshot is supposed to work). When I finished my round the scorecard uploaded to GCM. I tracked 6000 steps during the 9 holes, but I don't see that GPS was tracked at all. It seems to only be a scorecard, no activity shows up at all. I'm sure this has to be user error.

I'm trying to figure out the proper way to track my score and stats, while recording the event as an activity. Any help would be appreciated.

You basically should just use your watch to track your round as you stated. If you go into the golf app (at least for me) the rounds are automatically uploaded once they sync with the GC app and then you can see your score, statistics, and if autoshot worked, you will see the holes listed below your statistics. From there, you can click on a hole and see the hole layout with where you took your shots from. When it works it is great, but I too have been having problems with the watch "crashing" out of the golf activity mid-round and then you lose all of that information.

It also has some difficulties at times actually tracking when you are hitting a shot, but you can go into the golf round on the GC dashboard on a PC and edit to make it more accurate if you feel the need to.

I am on firmware 3.50. If Garmin fixes all of the issues from the first post which I still experience with 3.50, I would be happy, but (especially the crashing mid-round) issues make for a frustrating experience...
  • Returned my VA3 today to John Lewis and got the mother of all customer service, I purchased my VA3 at £249, the gave me todays price of £299 then price matched a Fenix 5 for £375!

just wondering if you tried this and the result. I was going to try the same thing.
