Stair count too high

One of the last few updates has changed the steps my Vivoactive 3 counts from being a few shy of actual to being way over the actual. When I walk up a hill it will count it like flight of stairs, so I end the day with 4 times my daily goal. Any one experienced this? Any solution?
  • When you walk up a hill, you are doing the same thing as when you walk up stairs (change in elevation, in a given time, etc). For my outdoor walking and hiking apps I display floors as you can get them with any walking that fits the definition of a "floor".

In other words, I don't think it's a bug. You just do a bunch of "floors" :)

Assume approximately 8 feet per floor as a conversion. Not sure what it really is, probably between 8 and 10.. The problem I am having is I almost always get a down number about 10% higher than an up when I start and end at the same point throughout the day. I don't need absolute precision or expect it (after all you are measuring the weight of only 8 ft of air, but better than 10% would be nice.
Many moons ago I made an avionics air pressure meter with a little graphical display, and the thing could discern stairs. While carrying it, you could clearly see the steps chart across. It was especially cool due to its extreme sensitivity and rejection of noise.
  • It was like that previously - close to actual, downs might be a bit different than ups, and total might be off by one or two flights. I think it should be able to tell stairs from an uphill walk, probably my measuring pressure change within a short time period. Maybe I'll try a reboot. Doesn't appear that either of you have experienced this with your device?
  • Not only are the stair count/floor count out of order, also the altitude readings and charts are going in random directions and way out of what they should be. This has to do with one of the latest Software updates, because everything worked Ok two weeks ago. Now I suddenly average 20-35 floors per day, before that my average was 15-16 and that was correct. The altitude chart errors are most annoying. I have reported this to Garmin Support, please do that also, otherwise they won't fix this. Go to: http://support.garmin.com/
  • It seems my experience with stair counts is quite the opposite - until this last firmware update my stairs were undercounted anywhere from 30-50%. I often climbed 100 flights and the watch showed 50 or less. Quite annoying as stairclimbing is one of my main activities. With v3.40 I am getting 80 to 90%. One memorable day the watch counted all flights except one.
  • I'm on 3.40 and I still see stair climbing being underreported. Occasionally I climb 4-5 floors and 0 ft gets registered - and other times on the exact same floors it works correctly.

I believe this should get reported to the Garmin dev team since apparently they don't really monitor/care about the posts on these forums.

That's odd. While I haven't seen this on mine, I have seen reports of this numerous times now. I will keep an eye on mine to see what happens over time. When one unit does it, and another does not, I start to wonder about the internet service providing the elevation fix based on lat/long is failing somehow, but we don't have transparency into how this is done.

If you record an activity, does the elevation profile on the Connect charts make sense? Or is it just the number provided on the VA3?

  • Here's today bike commute to work (14th of March) and one from 27th of February (that is correct as you can see on the altitude chart). Exactly the same route - elevation is out of bounds really bad. The altitude measurement is a joke right now...ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1322299.png
  • To be fair, prior to the last update the stair reporting was less than 50% but now its pretty much bang on.
  • I run 100 flights of stairs a couple of times per week. Before the update, I would be credited between 95-100 floors per workout. I was always impressed with the accuracy. Since the sensor update, I am credited between 30-35 floors. Something definitely went wrong.
