Just got my watch. What do I need to know?

Hello. So this is my 6th Garmin watch, Forerunner 205 (loved it!) Forerunner 10 (disappointed) vivofit, vivoactive(My fav so far. Lost in a lake) VA HR and now the VA3.

First, what widgets do I NEED to have? I had an MGRS one on the HR and liked it.

Any hadks for the watch i should know about?

I need a new watch face. I used the Garmin face ap...it sucks.

Is is something wrong with Garmin Connect ID store? I keep getting a message about servers messing up and I can’t download anything for my new watch. Didn’t know if it was Garmin or something else.

Thanks in advanced.

The watch can’t be that bad can it? I rather like how light it is.

The band and is a little small for my personal taste. And in the shower it kept bouncing from screen to screen. But I like it better than the HR.

Mine "bricked" at the start of the new year and I switched devices. My replacement was given to my son. While I had it, it worked OK for me. Just trying to bring a little humor to the forum.
  • It depends on what your use case is. Personally I use MyBattery and MyABC widgets, and the Garmin Titainium watch face. Other than that pretty much run it as it came.
  • It depends on what your use is.
    With respect to Widgets:
The Calendar (not the one that comes by default), one that allows you to go through the months, and shows you the current days of the month, I see it very useful.
myABC: That has the approximate altitude and the compass.

    With respect to the fields:
I particularly like the VO2Max estimates for cycling and running, the other default fields are fine.

The watch-face depends on each one haha, I have the Grunge X.

And the widgets by default heart rate, my day and last activity performed.

This is my second device, my first was an FR305, to run, ride a bike and swim meets my expectations, and as I always say I do not have the majority of errors that report in the forum.
  • One thing many folks have done is disable the swipe on the side of the case, as depending on how you wear it, it's easy to hit it by mistake, and have unexpected screen changes. (Settings>System>Side swipe, and tap the switch to turn it gray)

    depending on your intended use:
    * gps outdoor runs works fine, quick gps detection, speed and distance recording, good oHR recording, nice VO2max estimation, no complaints
    * swim app limited to two data fields, limited info/flexibility during the swim, but good data afterwards on the app and website (nr stroke, time, swolf, swimstroke detection etc), high battery use but of course easy to charge before or after (you won't run out during the swim unless you swim very long)
    * day to day activity tracking nice to have, raises awareness
    * sleep tracking a gimmick in my view
    * indoor run treadmill requires calibration at end of first run and possibly after later runs
    * people complain about sensor connections being lost, have not used it myself
    * some nice watch faces in the IQ connect store
    * changing to metric units requires to be done on the watch itself, is not synchronised via the app
    * counting floors is accurate (3m is one floor)

  • So I suppose I should add what I use this for:

    daily watch
    count steps/stairs
brag/bitch to my wife about how good/bad I slept. Lol
    mountain biking
    road biking
    running
    hiking
    dog walks

i don’t think I’ve tried the vo2 max stuff. What exactly does that track?

Is the Garmin store still down? I’ve been having issues downloading watch faces and widgets.
  • This is what this is what I keep getting everytime I try to download something.
