How can I disable automatic Firmware Updates

How can I disable automatic Firmware Updates like on the Edge Series?
  • Today again in the morning, without any question the Update to Firmware 3.50 was installed.

Please Garmin, let the user decide if they want to install the update like on the Edge-Series.

And as usual their QA was not done, and alarms today are going off 1 hour after they are scheduled
  • "Auto Update apps" is for CIQ apps, and not the firmware.

On the vivos, FW update always gets pushed to the device, as for support reasons they want you on the latest FW. If they didn't do that, and you were reporting a bug, the first thing they'd have you do is update the FW.

I don't think that was (or is) the case with the classic vivoactive. I think sometimes it gave you the choice on the watch -- otherwise, you would be asked. when I sync'd with the computer, Garmin Express would say "there is an update available" and I had the option to click on "install now" or something like that.

  • This is a poor solution. Off course every developer would like to have their fixes rolled out as fast as possible.
But as we all know, the software quality is sometimes... improvable.
And there are situations, where you don´t want to install the update. Right before starting an activity, waiting for a notification at work/in a car/wherever, controlling the music under the shower (this is where 3.40 kicked in), ect.
The Update is downloaded without wifi. It´s quite small, but I dislike anything which causes data consumption without my control.

It would be good to update at night, or even better to be asked.

I agree, it should be possible to postpone the FW installation/download notification to an appropriate time.
  • +1 with giving user the option of when to update SW.

IF Garmin was super meticulous with their SW updates and there are not NEW annoying problems that result from the SW update, I would be fine with auto updates.
However, that's not the case here.
As several above mention, there's always the fear that update will happen the night of a race. I can miss my wake up alarm, data may be screwed up, etc.
I have a race this Sunday, I do not want an update before then!

Apple lets users do SW updates at their convenience. I realize Garmin is not Apple, but the idea is the same. No one wants a SW update pushed to their phone or watch without warning or being able to control when it happens.
  • Yes, I strongly agree Garmin should find a solution to choose firmware update or not by user. Especially when the users are doing their race or practice and every second counts.

Garmin allows users that choice on Forerunner models, and I would guess the fenix models as well. The vivo range is more targeted at ‘lifestyle’ runners and cyclists, as well as the consumers who mainly want 24×7 step/sleep/HR trackers.
  • So? Does that mean, i can't expect that option in a 350€ watch? It may be targeted at more lifestyle runners, but nobody would like an update to start, while going on a run, cycling or even doing a really nice long hike. How many people are doing races isn't the number one concern i think. This for me is a very basic preference choice to be made.
  • So, DanielM, given the information you now have, wouldn't you say that the smart choice for you would be to go with a model in the Forerunner or fenix family of devices, instead of whinging about a reality you are powerless to change about the VA3 by yourself?
