Post-charge battery drain

This has been mentioned on other threads, but I'm interested in knowing how widespread the problem is.

After much testing, I am 100% certain that my VA3 needs to be reset after charging fully. Without doing this it will discharge to zero over a period of 12 hours or so. I speculate that charging leaves something running (GPS?) that should not be running.

Is this a general problem that all VA3 owners have? Other than resetting the watch, has anybody found a way around it?
  • I have not experienced this. I just charge mine, and the battery drain is typically .5%/hour if I"m not recording an activity.

    From my data point.
Charged yesterday, I think it got to 99% before I had to put it back on, in 8 hours it lost 18% charge
Last night I left it on charge for a couple of hours, so it got to 100% for a good while. Currently after 15 hours, and 1hr 20min of activity I am at 87%
  • I've never seen it drop that fast. When I last charged mine it was Sunday evening and I forgot to do a restart and it was down to 89% Monday morning. It's now Tuesday morning and it's only dropped to 76% since then. That's with oHRM and Bluetooth on full time but no recorded activities.
  • Yes, I have this problem. Especially if I charged via my laptop and Garmin Express. I now make it a point reboot the VA3 after I recharge.

I've been having this problem since mid December, but resets don't seem to help at all. I get about 6-10 hours on a full charge after a any type of reset you could name (different charging locations, different cables, every phase of the moon, in a box, with a fox, in a house, with a mouse...), doing nothing but sitting my butt down at my desk. Garmin keeps telling me to wait for the update. It's two weeks out.
    It's two weeks out.
    It's two weeks out.
    Uhhuh.
2.9 was the only update in that mix, and it did precisely nothing to fix the problem ?_?

I've finally gotten to the point where I called Garmin and convinced them to try an exchange (after getting the copypasta-y-est runaround via email support for two+ weeks). Clearly not everyone is having this issue. Maybe a new one will fix my problems.

I think that is your VA3, I didn't have any trouble in battery duration.
  • I also had no problem with the duration of the battery. For every 1 hour with GPS + GLONASS mode and data recording per second, it is downloaded at a rate of 8 ~ 10% and with the gestures activated during the activity.
In swimming at the time it is discharged approximately 20% but because the display is on most of the time.
And on the day without using GPS 5%.

Oh well. I got the impression from the other thread that many people were finding they had to reset their devices after a charge, or suffer terrible battery drain. If it's just one or two people, I suspect that the chance of Garmin fixing it is small :/

After charging my VA3 on my computer my VA3 shows the blue triangle and reboots - that might be Garmin programming a clever automatic reset;)

So I usually just charge my VA3 on an wall plug / phone charger and get about 4 days of use (light off, gesture off, bluetooth only every second day quickly on, one gps-activity per week, Display with second hand on). No reboot after charging. I never used or installed Garmin Express and will avoid this as long as possible.

Are you charging with a computer or a phone charger?

I usually plug the watch into a laptop to charge. I wonder if that makes a difference? I will try charging with a wall charger next time, just for comparison.
