Sync issues to Strava

Not sure if this should go here or Connect mobile, but I’ll try here first.

When I complete an activity on my Vivoactive 3, it automatically syncs to Strava, May well be GCM doing that for me. Thing is, I don’t get much data synced. I get an activity and time, I get only average heart rate and max heart rate, but that’s it.

I don’t get the heart rate graph for instance, I don’t get calories burned etc.

Any clues, suggestions. All of the information is on the GCM activity.

All suggestions appreciated.
  • It's actually the Garmin Connect servers that the mobile app talks to which shares the data with Strava. If the activity is syncing to Strava then all of the data that was part of the .FIT file your watch saved, that Strava supports, should be there.

Strava displays data for different types of activities differently, and the same activity will look different depending on if you're looking at it on the website or the mobile app.

On the website things like outdoor runs and hikes will have summary data at the top of the page with a map and the GPS trace below that. Under the map there should be a graph that by default will only show your pace, below the graph there are 2 little slider buttons that will toggle HR and cadence to show on the graph.

For an outdoor ride, again this is for the website, you have to click on analysis tab in the sidebar to the left of the map to get the graphs for pace, HR, and cadence,

With indoor activities the graphs for runs and rides should be just like they are for the outdoor version only with no map so you'll have to toggle HR and cadence for runs and select analysis for rides. Other indoor activities like strength training, yoga, elliptical, etc should just have HR graph below the summary.

Of course after writing all of that I open up the Strava app on my phone to make sure I'm describing how to get to the graphs there, and I see that non-run indoor activities are only showing AVG and Max HR values with no graph. Interesting. You will probably be better off contacting Strava support to find out about that it that's what you were talking about. I rarely use the Strava app because it's easier for my old eyes to look at the data on a computer or iPad screen than on my phone so had never noticed this before.

Thanks - Your last paragraph is exactly the situation, no graph, just average and max values.

i presume the fit file is generated on the vivoactive 3 and imported to Garmin Connect. It is that then transferred to Strava, so if the information is in Connect it should be in Strava. I’m not sure how all of this works. Fairly sure it worked ok from my Edge 520, but working away and can’t check.

ill raise a ticket with Strava and see how I get on.

Just in case anyone is interested, the issue I explain above is how it is designed to work. Strava have answered my ticket and suggested that the mobile app is unable to display a heart rate graph for a non gps activity. All of the information is on the activity via the website. Strava are working to Bette display the information from the activity. An activity with the gas trace will display properly.

at least it seems to be working as designed.
  • That's really strange that their graph design is different between the web interface and the mobile app for non-GPS activities.
