Garmin HRM - Run or Tickr X for the VA3 - Any experienced users' feedbacks?

As the VA3 oHRM is absolutely not accurate during workout (Ok as a fitness tracker, but not for working out), I am on the market for a HRM strap

Would the HRM-Run work with the Garmin and what data will be Syn with the connect app???
or should I go for the Tickr X and track all this on their app?

As they are both marketed at a similar price, I need to decide which one to go for (Pro vs Con etc)
Please share your experience on these HRM straps with the VA3
Any advice welcomed...

Thank you

Tony
  • I used the Tickr Run once before with the VA3 (my Edge 520 battery ran down so switched to the VA3 temporarily), no problems connecting via ANT+.
  • I have had the Tickr X for 12+ months and have just bought the standard Tickr as well. I'm not sure all the extra information (e.g. ground contact, smoothness etc) from the Tickr X syncs into GCM however I am not a runner. The information is available in the Wahoo app. One thing to note with the Tickr X (and one of the reasons I am buying the standard Tickr) is that it has an offline mode that you cannot turn off.

Therefore it will start logging information as soon as you put it on, even if you have not started your run. This only becomes a potential issue if you are syncing to the Wahoo app. If you are syncing to your watch and then to GCM the start/stop of the exercise via the watch works fine so you don't get the pre-start and post-finish data.

On the Wahoo app they have a relatively easy feature to trim the beginning and end of the workouts, but I wish they had an option in the app to disable offline mode. The reason I mention this is that due to the GCM<->Apple Health issues I decided to try a few days of having my VAHR watch track all information including workouts, but then not sync the actual workout data to Apple Health. I then used my Tickr X to sync the workout data to Apple Health. It was a mess....

Hope that makes sense, it may be that I've overlooked something in the Tickr X that solves the above issue. Also note that in offline mode the Tickr X doesn't record all the extra data e.g. oscillation etc.

In terms of which one to get.. If you want to be able to run without any phone/watch connected then go for the Tickr X as it has memory. If you will always have a phone or a watch then go for the Tickr Run. At present the Run is on sale at Wahoo Fitness ($59.99 vs $79.99)

  • TheSalamander Thanks for the detailed info,

I have been digging the forum and understands that the Garmin HRM-Run only acts as a simple HRM (no running dynamics etc with the VA3.
I am therefore likely to go for the Tickr. but not sure which one.
In any case, I will link it to the VA3 for HR capture during workouts (better than the watch oHRM which tells me I am in Zone 1 when I am actually in Zone 4-5!)
The Tickr X seems interesting (despite the offline stuff) for the cadence on the bike and cadence on elliptical etc...
The Tickr Run seems to be a simple HRM and doesn't have the cadence and dynamics captures...

I am a beginner runner and the Garmin price tag for running dynamics enable devices is out of my reach. Tickr X seems to be a more affordable solution even if I will have to use 2 apps (GCM and Wahoo).
  • I've used a TICKR-X for a few years, with a variety of Garmin devices, and have always found it very useful/reliable, etc. I do use the VZ3 wrist-mode OHR when running, and then when mountain biking I use the TICKR-X (I put the VA3 on a Garmin handlebar mount so I can better see the info, and since it's not on my wrist, I use the TICKR-X). Really do like it, yes.EASY
  • As said above the Tickr works well with this watch. There's no benefit to getting the Garmin HRM-Run with the VA3 though since it doesn't support the running dynamics that the strap is capable of. You'd have to the 645 or higher to get those stats.
  • Thanks all for your very useful feedbacks.
Tickr X it is then, with the benefits of the running dynamics on a separate app (which is OK, as I am no a pro-runner!).
  • I haven't used the Wahoo app since not long after I got my Tick X but the running dynamics were lies useful than Garmins.

Mainly because the left/right balance only told you it was of but not to which side.
  • Yes you're seeing both the Ant+ and BT signals the one titled tickrx should be the BT. I'd suggest using the BT as that's what I've used from day one with this strap while getting the odd drop when using my HRM-Run strap which is Ant+
  • Hi All,
I also got my Tickr X yesterday and did a 15 min run (at 145-155 bpm) and 10 min rowing at (150-160 bpm). The HRM was paired and recorded fine on the watch during the workout, I can see the HR in the CGM app and the watch wrist oHRM was disabled. Yet no intensity minutes recorded ???
Anyone got the same issue with HRM strap vs intensity minutes with the VA3?
