Using watch when cycling with an Edge computer?

I ordered a vivoactive 3, and I'm not sure if I should take it down when going for a ride with my Edge 500 computer (+ HR & speed/cadence sensors) to avoid duplicate data, or I can leave it on. Do you guys have experience with similar setups?

I would be interested in an answer to your question. Like you I have just bought a Vivoactive 3 and I also have a Garmin 800. I've just used both of them to do a turbo session and it duplicates the info in both Garmin Connect and Strava. Is there a way of merging the data? Thanks
  • I might record the activity on a watch and edge, but when I'm done, I typically discard what's on the watch and save what's on the edge. You could save both and then discard one on Garmin Connect, but you probably will get duplicates on Strava.

I use my VA3 to broadcast HR to my Edge 510 which Livestreams my position via phone. At the end of the ride, I sync the 510 to GCM. The 510 reports speed, cadence, position, distance, elevation, HR and temperature to GCM. Even though the VA3 isn't directly sync'd to GCM, it tracks my Intensity Minutes (fantastic job of tracking IM).

I've also recorded both. Normally I use my watch for the HR information but, on the occasions when my Edge 1000 crashes, at least I can record the ride from my watch.

Addendum: I now use an independent HRM and send its data directly to the 510. I have done a few rides where I compare the VA3 and 510's GPS data (GPS only, no GLONASS for this guy). The VA3 tracks fairly well considering it doesn't have the greatest view of the constellation. I'm also happy with the VA3's internal HRM, although it's not as accurate as the external sensor (well documented, of course).
  • I am using a vivoactive 3 with an Edge 830.

    • Currently toggling between Broadcasting the HR from Settings   –vs–  starting a Biking Activity for the ride and discarding the watch recording before uploading.
    • I like the Heart Rate Zone Gauge screen on the watch available when you record a Bike Activity.
    • I prefer the Edge 830 be my single source of ride data.

Looking for perspectives and options for the following:

    1. I'm curious if others have found a way to get this Heart Rate Zone Gauge screen without running a watch Activity (it's part of Bike, and Run, possibly others).
    2. I'm looking for an easier way to turn on/off the HR broadcasting feature of the watch before and after a ride without starting a watch Activity.
    3. If I do Broadcast HR, or start a watch Activity, the watch face is hidden by default. Any way to get around this?

    thanks
