Indoor rowing - steps counted?

Hi all - in the last few days (since 2.70?) I’ve been hitting my daily step goal while rowing...that’s great for the stats but not honest, and I don’t recall it happening previously. Does anyone else have the same experience with non-walking activities?
  • I think that a few times over the summer when I was bike commuting a lot I was getting some inflated step counts but it wasn't by enough where I was sure that it was happening. (short commute)

The last couple of weeks I've been doing about 10 minutes of rowing machine before my upper body workouts as a warm up but haven't noticed anything. I'll be doing a rowing machine warm up at lunch time today and will make a note to see whether or not any step get added.
  • I've been constantly getting steps during on the water and indoor rowing workouts, and while riding a bike on my VAHR. Assume VA3 should be the same. On the bike it's apparently driven by bumps and potholes on the road, however the number of steps during rowing sessions doesn't equal the number of strokes, which I would expect, but rather exceeds the latter significantly.

My OTW workouts are usually over one hour, indoor rowing sessions - 45-60 min. I'm recording up to 2-3K steps during them.
  • i can concur, just came from gym, 20 min on row machine added 2k+ steps on my V3 and i seems some steps were added during my weight training afterwards too.
  • Thanks for confirming my suspicions. For those who have noticed it dramatically (eg Robert) are you on 2.70?

yes i got 2.70 i only have this watch for 2 weeks or so. Had fenix 3hr before. I assume all the issues will be slowly fixed with new updates, at least i hope so, bcs seriously the number of bugs in this device is mind-blowing :(
  • I got a little over 900 steps added during a 10 minute indoor row with 330 strokes.
  • Hi Garmin — fix please! :)

(Is there a formal bug submission system?)
  • It is not really a bug, just a limitation in the use of accelerometry (and associated algorithms) to distinguish steps vs other repetitive accelerations/decelerations. The same happens during swimming. Think of "steps" as "activity units" rather than actual steps. Really what is needed is the option to turn off step counting during specific activities (much like HR is not read during swimming).

Exactly — I agree in principle but you simply can’t walk and row at the same time so it shouldn’t take the user community to consider and suggest it as a feature. It’s a bug.

What I need to test this weekend is my cardio activity I set up to use while drumming. Back with my VAHR it was evident that ten minutes of drumming could earn me my daily step quota, so I run the activity to avoid counting steps. Wonder if that still works (haven’t been behind the kit for a few weeks). Rowing technically is a strength activity vs cardio so maybe there’s a difference.

But regardless, it’s never been this bad or I’d have noticed it earlier — and certainly the VAHR didn’t do this. A half hour rowing is nearly 3,000 steps...! :-/
