Training after illness

I'm just recovering from a heavy cold. It has been interesting to see the changes calculated by my vivoactive 3 while I've been ill. My stress score has increased from the low teens to the high 40's presumably because my resting heart rate was increased by the cold. My vo2 max hasn't been calculated since I've been ill as I haven't been for a run, but I suspect it will show a marked reduction when it recalculates.

Has anyone out there any thoughts about resuming training after illness and the best way to utilise the vovoactives' metrics?
  • I've been in this situation a couple of times since I started caring about fitness last year. Back then I had a fitbit blaze. The metrics are interesting to track of course, but more than any of the tracked metrics I'd say ease in and pay close attention to how your body feels, don't immediately go back to the same training load you had before. Assuming it was a short illness, you'll be back to your old level in a week at the most. Of course then you'd see that reflected in your metrics :-)

    Cheers.
  • I usually wait until my RHR gets back to normal levels, and then start training at lower intensity for the first several sessions. No science behind it, just think it's better to play it safe.
  • Interesting topic. I have noticed that my RHR starts to elevate 1-2 days prior to any symptoms showing up. As far as returning to training, I would agree to listen to your body and take into account how long you haven't trained and train at the levels appropriate for those things taken into account... No sense in coming off an illness and getting injured...
