Garmin Pay in Canada?

Does anyone know if Garmin Pay is coming to Canada? And if yes, when?

Best, Shawn
  • how is possible that ukraine, sud-africa and russia has it, but not canada? not to say all western europe has it, japan, etc...

certification and other things has nothing to do with the implementation; they are rather excuses!!

is about how slow we are as a nation to new technology!

how backwards we became with all the approval-birocracy-paper pushers at government level. Our government is more involved with nonsense and pictures with prim-minister runnning, eating, sleaping... we are really really really backward... how about other countries, france, holand, germany, england?... why they have it? they don't have regulations and approval systems?

the common people of china, japan, all west-europe (maybe ukraine+russia) can pay a bus fare by phone/nfc... now, the end of 2018, we barely have prestocard and is not working as advertised!! and how and why garmin sells something that is not working? why advertise the garmin pay if it's not working with at least one bank/credit card?

Garmin Pay works just fine. If the banks in your country haven't approved its use, contact your bank. Garmin has no authority to tell any financial institution that they are required to use their service. If you're disappointed that you can't use Garmin Pay, that's understandable. Blaming the wrong party is just ridiculous.

He has a point though. It does not matter if it works flawlessly in principle, it is useless in Canada if it is not supported. He does not blame because of the feature malfunctions, he blames the fact that despite it not being supported, it is still advertised. Imagine you want to market an cell phone in a place that does not have any cellular network, and you start putting forward all wireless communication features. That's what is wrong with it. But of course, most companies do this sort of deliberate miscommunication

ErikBennacer I disagree. Where I live Comcast is the cable provider. There's advertising on TV, radio, mail flyers and in the newspapers. I can't get it because I live "in the sticks" and I'm too far from their feed. I have to use satellite TV. Comcast didn't false advertise. I could pay out of my own pocket to extend their feed if I choose to get their service just as the banks in Canada can sign on to Garmin Pay. My point is Comcast didn't false advertise. It was my decision, just as Garmin didn't false advertise. It's the decision of the banks in Canada.
  • I apologize for the frustrations of not having any banks in Canada available for Garmin Pay. Banks decide which contactless payment systems they want to work with. If your card is not listed as being compatible, contact your bank and express your desire to have them work with Garmin Pay.

  • Did that. Got a canned response from Desjardins :(

I completely get that the decision lies with the bank, that they have to certify it to work on their system. My frustration is that Canadian retailers actually "advertise" Garmin Pay as a feature of the device in Canada. See: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/garmin-forerunner-645-music-42mm-gps-watch-with-heart-rate-monitor-black/12308451.aspx? There is some responsibility that Garmin has to own with regards to the lack of banks willing to certify it to work, they should be lobbying at least one bank to certify it in Canada so it is actually a valid solution. Canadians (users in general) get that tech like this doesn't always work with every bank, and they get that features may not work everywhere geographically, but when a feature is advertised then it should work somewhere at least! Garmin deferring to the end users who paid good money for their technology and telling the user to "call their bank" is not a reasonable ask. Banks won't care about adding this feature for one off users asking, but if Garmin Canada - who has all the data on how many Garmin Pay enabled watches were sold in Canada - were to pitch a bank in Canada, telling them how the bank could differentiate themselves by lighting up Garmin Pay then it could easily be a selling feature for that bank to get new customers. Would I get a credit card on Canadian Bank X because I could finally use Garmin Pay - absolutely! Would many of you who own Garmin Pay enabled watches get a new credit card that works on the bank that support it - probably. Come on Garmin, help out those who bought your technology and lobby one bank to support it in Canada! Or ensure retailers are not promoting it as a feature in Canada. Thanks!
  • Well, that's a BestBuy description so I would think it's more a false advertisement from BestBuy than Garmin IMHO, but yeah, I would really like it if it would work from Canada, preferably Desjardins :)

Maybe. But BestBuy (and others) just copy the manufacturer spec.
