Trouble to stop an activity - to cold?

Hi,
I'm still a VA3 beginner but I think this is a bug and not a user mistake.
Yesterday I was running the first time. After about 3km the watch was suddenly vibrating every 30sec and has shown different things on the display ( e.g. heart rate graph). The display was locked and shouldn't change I would say.
Once I was done with the activity I've pressed the button to unlock and the to stop. Unlock was ok but I couldn't stop the activity. The touch screen was not working at all. After a while I've done a 10-15sec long press to shutdown. After restart I was able to stop the activity and save the result.
At this time I had installed the dwMap app on the VA3 but used the standard running activity.
However I thought that dwMap caused the issue and uninstalled it.
Today I was running again. After 3km the display started to show the big lock icon on the screen. After 10km it started to vibrate for no reason again. I've not set an heart rate alarms etc. At km 13 I tried to stop the activity. Unlock with button was working fine but instead of stopping the activity it was just paused and the touch screen and bezel wasn't working. Long press button to shutdown and restart -> same problem. Long press shutdown/restart again -> now I was able to stop and save the activity.
Temperature was about 4°C and my fingers where really cold.
I've FW 2.60 installed.

  • I did my first truly cold run with my VA3 yesterday, 34f, and had no problems at all. It was just a short 5 miler, but did 11 miles today in 38f weather also with no problems.

On both runs the watch was exposed in a gap between shirtsleeve and glove.

I did test my VA3 today explicidly to this behaviour after I had the malfuntion last week on two runs: one 8.6km and a 5.5 run at nearly 0°C here in Switzerland. It happend again today and it was "much" warmer -- around 4°C. Today I had the VA3 not covered with a sleeve or something, but last week it was. I just could it get back to work normal when I connected it with a cable to a PC.
I also did a factory reset over the weekend and also installed the new firmware 2.70 but as I said it happend again today. I opend up a case at Garmin and gave this thread as a reference -- maybe it helps.
I hope I get a refund or a new device -- which I can sell right after. I will stick with my VAHR or will get me a Forerunner 935, which I should've bought firsthand instead of the VA3.

Count me in as another VA3 owner that is experiencing this temperature related touch screen problem. I just bought it yesterday and went out for a run this morning in ~32F. I could stop the activity by pressing the button but I could not press done on the touchscreen. After showering and getting ready for work the touchscreen is working again. Very frustrating as this was my very first run!

I contacted Garmin today and they said this is a priority but the more that people call will push it up the priority list. If you don't mind, call Garmin at 913-397-8200 and refer to case # PSC 410.

I just got my unit a few days ago. I did all the software updates (2.7). I went out for my first run on Sunday in NYC where it was in the low 30's. When my run was done, I could stop my activity using the side button but the touchscreen was unresponsive so I couldn't hit 'done'. Even after I went aside the touchscreen stayed non responsive until I pushed and held the side button for 15 seconds and it rebooted the unit.

i.e. Add me to the list... : )
  • Yesterday i Hiking and after 2 Hours i cant finish the activity, my touchscreen non responsive. And this was not the first Time, i write an Message (i think 4 weeks ago) to Garmin Support, and they told me that the Developers checking this issue...

Next Time i make a Video for Garmin Support, and if they can't fix it, i want my money back...

I'm having the exact same issue with not being able to save a workout. my watch touchscreen seems to 'freeze' and I'm not able to complete my workout. So far support hasn't been much help. the suggestion was to "lock" the screen because it could be my sleeve messing it up. I've had this watch going on 1.5 weeks and I've been frustrated with the workout functionality. I'm just going to call tech support tomorrow instead of exchanging emails that don't seem to be getting anywhere. I expressed to the tech person that this seems like a real performance issue and if it can't be resolved I'll look for a different fitness watch.
  • Nothing new from Garmin :(
Did my first run after the FW change to 2.70.
It was more or less the same but some new issues on top. This time the screen was not locked during the activity but the setting for "Auto Lock" is set "Always". The activity is uploaded to Garmin connect but the steps, calories and activity minutes are missing.

Please mention PSC-1190 and PSC-410 if you call/email/chat tech support. This will ensure that this gets up on the priority list.

count me in too, mine does it as soon as the GPS kicks in, screen stops working (sometimes it goes crazy for a few seconds before then, like a stuck scrolling function). I've a custom activity with no GPS set-up, that one works ok.

    Hi,
I am experiencing the issues too, with screen going crazy during workout in low temperature. Please count me in if it's going to help with fast fix from Garmin.
