With the new 4.1.5 update to GCM, I get all notifications except for SMS on my Android phone. This is the third time an update for GCM has made this happen. Tried removing the VA3 from my phone's Bluetooth list, rebooting the phone, pair with the phone again and a hard restart of my VA3. Nothing helps just like the previous two times. On the bright side I now have Garmin Pay which doesn't currently support any of my Visa cards. This is getting old Garmin!!!
I found a work around that worked for me. I had to go into GCM settings, smart notifications, turn off my SMS app and then sync my watch. Go back in and turn my SMS app back on and sync again. Now it's working.
It could be worse, try it on a windows phone. Sync bar completes twice before turning green and no data goes across, but you will get about 50% of your notifications and the app is updated only once every month or two even if there is a horrible bug. And most of the time the syncing corrupts causing you to lose data because there is no validation and no way to sync old data. Every time the website version updates to accommodate a new iPhone or android version syncing breaks for the rest of the day and starts working again after midnight making garmin express the only real option for stable syncing but losing most of the watches features.
