Swimming Pool Length

I note the on board pool swimming app only allows the smallest custom length of 17 meters which is no good for most backyard swimming pools.

Are there any work arounds or third party apps that allow smaller lengths?
  • A simple although not the most convenient workaround would be to register the activity with the minimum allowed pool size and then editing the pool size to the real value with http://www.swimmingwatchtools.com/
  • In the Android Connect App you can edit down to 10M
  • Thanks guys. I was thinking about this, and maybe the custom length size is due to GPS accuracy.
  • Nothing to do with GPS - GPS is switched off for pool swims - distance for a pool swim is calculated by number of pool lengths x length of pool
  • Agreed. To simplify the math for editing, I just choose a custom length double the actual size and adjust later. More annoying than editing is actually swimming in these bath tubs. ;)
  • Two years on since this issue was first highlighted and still no fix from Garmin! My pool is only 14m long so it's very frustrating that the 'custom' pool setting doesn't allow for pools with a length of less than 17m. Why not? I don't see any logic to this limitation. Surely 'custom' should mean exactly that!

Two years? Are you referring to the VA3 or another device? The VA3 is only 14 months old and I'm able to adjust my 935 to 14 meters. Is this something you've had issues with prior to the VA3 also?

Oh, this is much older than that :)
Ever since Garmin introduced pool swimming into its devices (5-6 years ago, maybe even more), the minimal pool size was 17m.

You don't but garmin engineers obviously do. I'm not a garmin representative, so I do not know the reason for sure, but if I was to speculate, I'd say, that shorter pools do not allow to accumulate enough samples for the algorithm to detect the swimming style and/or tell apart separate lengths, especially for efficient swimmers.

One more anecdote. I don't know how it looks on latest suunto devices, but some time ago suunto allowed shorter pool length, but then changed it to 17 m as well. So I figure there is a very good reason for it.
  • tmk2 thank you for providing feedback for other users. I am adding a link from our Support Center website that reiterates the reason for the shortest custom pool length being set to 17M: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Vo57SHe12l57nh6C5NpHM7&productID=571520&searchQuery=custom%20pool%20length&tab=topics
  • TMK17 First, I would like to apologize for my delay in the response time. Our team has responded to customer requests for lowering the limit for pool length and found in testing that we could still get accurate data, which explains the difference you are seeing with your forerunner 935. We have passed along the feedback of wanting to see such a change on the vivoactive 3, but I cannot confirm that this will be changed at this time.
