Can't connect to sensors

So I have an issue where I cant do a treadmill run (the watch just doesn't record pace/distance and won't calibrate at the end of a run) and thought I would connect my footpod up from my fenix 3. The VA3 9 times out of 10 won't detect it, and when it does finally detect it will lose it after a few seconds. The footpod works fine as the Fenix 3 can see it and connect (and stay connected).

Anyone else having issues with connecting footpods or other sensors?

Im really not sure if this is a firmware bug (I can't find a way to reinstall the firmware), or a hardware bug. Of course no one from Garmin will respond to my support emails either :(

The VA3 is starting to look like a bit of a lemon to be honest

Hi from Sweden I am not an expert but I have read that ANT + and Bluetooth lite (smart) ? goes on 2.4gHz and if You have a strong router and it could interfere if it is on 2.4ghz. So many suggest that one should alter the router to 5GHZ instead.

    ashley,
Have you tried the online support chat or a phone call to Garmin? I would like to hear the resolution to this issue as I am considering a footpod for my VA3.

I'd definitely give Garmin a call. This issue is likely software related like 99% of all issues, but at least they can document (possibly open a case too) and advise the next steps.

If you dont have the time to do that, I'd uninstall any 3rd party watch faces or apps and try a soft reset (hold power button until device screen goes blank and then power back up) and re-test. If issues persist, I'd then move to a reset to factory defaults and re-test.
  • The only sensor I've had an issue with on the va3 is using the Tempe from a CIQ app. It's been reported to Garmin and is being investigated. (it's not a problem with the apps) It pairs fine, and works fine with native apps, but it can't be seen in CIQ.

BTW, uninstalling 3rd party watch faces isn't really needed here and never really solves anything like this. You just have to redo all the settings when you re-install.

Just ry a hard power off - hold the button until the watch turns itself off (about 15 seconds) and turn it back on. It solves many things.

I'd have to disagree there, and it is an official troubleshooting step that Garmin will advise on if you contact them. Do they always cause issues? No, but any software added to the watch that hasn't been tested by Garmin is a potential issue.

There's also been a few different people on these forums that were having battery life issues until they removed specific 3rd party apps/watch faces.
  • I'm been doing CIQ watchfaces since early 2015, and never seen or heard of a WF causing a problem like this. CIQ watchfaces are VERY sandboxed, in what they can do, and are just something support may mention from their checklist. They'll tell you to remove them if a button gets stuck! :)

BTW, I run CIQ watchfaces exclusively, and my battery is doing just fine (after a hard boot). Including a couple with background processes for weather data.

Well, I think apps are certainly the more pertinant items versus watch faces, but in my time in support we had a TON of issues with watch faces causing issues, specifically on the 920XT and Fenix 3, but after that they got a lot better.

I have to agree with Jim. I do not have his experience with building CIQ watchfaces, but I have built a few myself. I could see a watchface effecting battery life, but not affecting connectivity with a sensor. (Especially since the watchfaces cannot even connect to remote sensors).
  • back in the early 1.0.x days of CIQ, they could do some nasty things, but that was taken care of quickly, long ago. (CIQ is up to 2.3.x today)

    Jim,
That does not surprise me in the least...
