Treadmill run not recording pace/distance

Just tried to do a few treadmill runs today after getting the VA3. On my first run it wasn't registering any distance or pace .. so I ran the 1.5km (1mi) thinking that I could do the calibration thing and nothing happened. I then hooked up my footpod sensor (with brand new batteries) and did a treadmill run .. all went fine for about 3/4 of a k and then the footpod seemed to disconnect. Yet again, after 2k I stopped to see if I could calibrate after the run (and I couldn't as the watch itself hadn't registered at least 1.5k). I removed the footpod and tried again, the watch measured 0.34km then no longer registered and pace or distance.

Am I doing something wrong here? Anyone got any suggestions?

Do you wear the watch on your wrist while running? Do you swing your arms freely or do you hold the rail?
  • yeah watch on wrist and swing my arms like normal
  • Have you done any outdoor runs? By default the watch should be programmed to use a base set of parameters to get pace and distance so it really shouldn't matter, but that will help it be more accurate for you. Same with the foot pod but there have been some complaining about sensors dropping in another thread so that's probably the issue there.

My best advise without knowing more is the old "Turn it off and back on" trick and see if that helps at all. You'd think that advise wouldn't still be an issue these days but it's surprising how often that solves weird little glitches like this.

    Otherwise contact Garmin support.
  • Thanks for the help .. I restarted the watch and got 2.4k into a run this morning before it stopped registering my pace/distance. I then did a "reset to defaults" on the watch and went for another run and got to about 2k before it stopped registering anything.

I havent got for an outdoor run yet .. i'll do that tomorrow .. but I thought it would register with the accelerometer and keep track.
  • I'd contact support because that's just not right. I haven't used a treadmill since getting my VA3 but since I have a recovery run scheduled for today I'll give it a try and see what happens.
  • I was able to get a solid result on a 5 mile 46 minute treadmill run this evening. The only problem was minute or so of the HR being too high at the start because I didn't tighten up the strap at first.
  • Garmin suggested that I use the web updater to reinstall the software.

Web updater crashes every time I try to run the update though haha

Did an outdoor run this morning and will try a treadmill run later tonight or tomorrow
  • I've reset this watch so many times now .. I think the issue is that when I do a treadmill run it also enables the GPS. I know on my old garmin watches you used to be able to create an activity and tell it what sensors you wanted to use .. I cant seem to do that anymore.

Also, the footpod (which would solve all of this) continually disconnects.
  • I solved this over the last few days - seems it was a watchface issue. There seems to be a small selection of watchfaces that use GPS as a part of their display that cause issues with non-GPS related activities.
