Venu Watch does not update time when I change time zones

This is what Garmin support told me when I queried why my Venu watch did not update to the new time zone when I went on holiday

Thank you for contacting Garmin,

In order for the device to change time zone you need to connect to GPS by starting an activity as the GPS is not active 100% of the time. Syncing your device through the Garmin connect app or connecting to a wifi signal will also sort this for you.

Time Zones
Each time you turn on the device and acquire satellites or sync with your smartphone, the device automatically detects your time zone and the current time of day.

This is what the manual states - my false presumption ( and expectation ) from this statement is that  eg leaving an airport in a new zone  it would automatically acquire enough satellite signals to correct the time without any interaction from me
Very disappointed to find it cannot do that when much older devices do. ( even my old camera ) Many places i travel to do not have wifi at my final destination
Perhaps a software update is needed
  • You do not need a wifi connection to update your date and time. You just need to either 1)- be connected and sync to your Garmin Connect app via Bluetooth, which should update your time based off of what time your watch displays. Or 2)- step outside (standing by a window may work), press the upper right button to select an Outdoor activity, wait for your "Wait for GPS" screen to say "Ready". When it says "Ready", that means that satellites have been located, which will update your date and time. At that point, you can just press your bottom right button to go back to your watchface. You do not need to actually start the activity. Your watch will not locate GPS satellites without being prompted to by attempting to start an activity.
