Activity minutes for walk activity?

Does Garmin not track activity minutes for their walk activity?  Up until today, I’ve been using the indoor cycling activity which automatically tracks my intensity minutes.  Today I decided to go for a brisk walk so I used the “walk” activity. After completion, I reviewed  the workout in Connect and noticed that intensity minutes aren’t even tracked. Am I missing something or does Garmin not include this in their walk activity?  Thanks.

  • Yes it does, I walk all the time with intensity minutes.  You need to meet the criteria you have setup in the Connect app for your HR for at least 5 minutes before it begins tracking.

I would open the app and check two things.

    1. Go into your device options. Go to “user settings”, “heart rate zones”.  They are set pretty high initially, I would make them closer to the American Heart Association guidelines for vigorous intensity. I have my zone 4 (vigorous) set for 72-84% and my zone 3 (moderate) set for 64-72% or MHR.

    2. After that go to “activity tracking”, “weekly intensity minutes”, set vigorous for zone 4 and moderate for zone 3.

Doing those two steps will give you intensity minutes for a brisk walk.

  • There may be two issues. In addition to setting your zones appropriately for your personal heart range, there's also the "auto-detect" feature to initiate a "walk" activity. Of course you can manually start a "walk" without having it automatically detected (after typically 5 minutes of walking).

As noted by CindiL, you need to be walking at a heart rate in at least zone 3 or 4 in order to accumulate any intensity minutes.

  • Interestingly enough, I've got a similar issue today ... clearly I've spent much time in my daily (custom) cardio workouts this morning - which usually register intensity minutes. Today, neither of two cardio workouts - during which I spend most of the time in Zone 3 & 4 - registered any intensity minutes ... weekly total still stands at 0. I gave it a few hours to register ... still nothing showing up. Am losing confidence in this device slowly but surely.

  • So I had this problem on my elliptical some time ago and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting my intensity minutes.  I found I was taking a 10 second water break every 5 minutes and my HR would dip just below my threshold and so my 5 minutes wouldn’t count.  Now I make sure to go 6 minutes before pausing / resting / drinking water so I get the 5 minutes counted.  Since I did that, it correctly counts them.

I’d double check your HR during the activity and see if it is dipping down. I’d also double check your zones etc in the app.  Once in awhile my app resets, not sure why, maybe when it updates.  I lose the settings I put in of the 70-85% max HR for my zone 4.

  • Thanks! Very interesting ... perhaps I need to pay closer attention as to whether I'm in at least zone 3 or 4 for an interrupted 5 minutes . Sometimes I dip below as my body isn't always needing to work that hard even as my pace continues. I wonder if it matters whether the 5 minute auto-detect feature is on, perhaps getting in the way of registering intensity time even if I've manually started an activity. Then again, these were "cardio" activities, for which there is no auto-detect that I'm aware of.
