I am using walking pad with electric computer desk above and watch obviously cannot count steps when wrist is lying on the desk. Similar problem should have mums with baby carriage. Should I buy a chest strap?

Yes, HRM-PRO chest strap would work for you. You could also use the Garmin RD-POD or any foot pod. They discontinued the Garmin foot pod, but you can find them used some places. There are also Stryd and less expensive Zwift-Runpod foot pods

The venu is not compatible with the RD-POD.
Garmin used to make a digital pedometer called vivoki. I got one. Everyday, I drop it in my pocket and it counts steps without arm movements. I push a wheelchair a lot and this counts those steps. You can find one for $10-15 on eBay or Facebook market. A little tricky to set up, but when you do, it’s rock solid.
