Venu crashing/frozen after software update this morning

I got a notification on my venu this morning that a software updated was needed. I tapped yes, it started then it crashed/froze. It's constantly going back and forth between the blue triangle and the download gear icon.

I've tried rebooting it, doesn't work. I've tried connecting to a computer, doesn't work (can't be found).

I don't know what to do now. :( Help!

  • My venu also has a problem after the update. Does not accept input anymore from tipping the screen after a sport run

  • I've plugged it up to my Mac and left it plugged in for a few hours and now its on the download screen but stuck at 50% (or appears to be stuck there) for the last little bit.

Is there anyway to fix this and get the software back installed correctly without having to send my watch in and get a replacement?  I can use a PC if there is a way to get into the watch when it won't connect to a Mac but I'd need to have step by step instructions. Sooo if anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I hate to have to wait on a new watch. Disappointed

  • Hello .  It sounds like the software update file that was downloaded to your watch (but not yet fully installed) became corrupted somewhere in that process.  You will need to remove that file and re-download it.  Please follow steps below:

    1. First, you will need to perform a Master Reset of your watch
      • With unit in “off” state, turn the unit on with 2 o’clock button and release
      • Approximately 3 seconds after the display turns on press and hold both buttons
      • After the unit vibrates once, release the 2 o’clock button
      • Wait for another vibration and release the 4 o’clock button also
      • Wait for the unit to finish booting. It should go into the startup wizard
      • Complete the startup wizard, but do NOT pair with your phone yet
    2. Next, sync your watch using Garmin Express
    3. After completing the sync, remove the watch from the charging cable and choose to install the update
    4. After the update completes, you may then pair the watch/phone once again
  • Thank you! I dropped the watch off to a UPS location this morning but just called when you message came through and it hasn't been picked up yet. I'm going to go get it and give this a try in hope it will work and no exchange is needed!

To confirm I understand all the steps, for step 3, when Garmin Express pairs with my watch will it automatically install the pending updates (I ask because I see there is an update pending).

Also for step 3, the watch does NOT need to be plugged into the computer or paired with my phone in order to install the update? Correct?

FINGERS CROSSED THIS WORKS but if not, I'll send it out tomorrow for an exchange. (I wish the chat person would have given this information to me on Sat when I talked to them. It sure would have been great to know before I dropped it off to UPS and have to go retrieve it.)

  • The watch will need to be connected to the charging cable that should be plugged into your computer on which you are running Garmin Express.  Having the watch connected to the computer is the only way that the watch will be recognized by Garmin Express.  Garmin Express (in my opinion) is the most reliable way to successfully push updates to the watch.

  • Thank ! That fix worked and my watch is back to working. There are a couple things that aren't working correctly (1) the step goal I set up in the connect app isn't being pushed to the watch (2) sometimes it turns on when I lift my arm to look at the time, sometimes it does not. Is this a problem from the update?

  • First, please login to Garmin Connect Web and verify your step goal there.  Then please use Garmin Express to sync your watch.  Let's see if this pushes the step goal to your watch.

How Do I Install Garmin Express?

After you sync your watch there, please hard reset your watch.  That should resolve your backlight/display issue.  If it does not, you can go to the display settings and verify/change those settings.

  • Hello,
I have the same problem. Watch turns on, you can see a blue triangle, then a gear, progress to 50% after about 5 minutes. Then it freezes. The watch becomes visible in Garmin Express as Venu V02.30 device ID: 0. Not seen as a drive (windows 10) no access to files.

The master reset instruction does not work - holding two buttons before it vibrates, the watch turns off.

Is there any other solution known? Help ;(

  • All-

If you are still experiencing this issue, please make sure that your Venu 2 is updated to software 6.50.  You may need to master reset the watch in order to do this.  If you still get stuck trying to install this 6.50 update, please reach out to your local Garmin Product Support Team (by telephone) for step by step assistance.
