GPS accuracy

Hello all,

maybe i'm asking for too much but is this the best that venu can do? Or is this the best that GPS watches can do?

I don't have a smartphone comparison but it doesn't look better than the phone's GPS.

There is a small hill on one side but it's pretty open on the other sides.

  • Yeah this is about as good as it goes. You could try different Sattelite providers, I think default is GPS. You could try GLONASS or Galileo and see if that improves it for your region. But 3-5 Meters of deviation are fairly normal in a small battery powered device (higher resolution requires considerably more power). Please note, this is my experience with various other devices.

  • I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Which of those lines is the Venu? I'm impressed   that you know what you're looking at Slight smile

I find the Venu to be generally accurate, but all over the place as far as keeping a straight, or uniform, line based on where I walked. The Venu 2 seems a lot better when I look at the GPS trail after my walks.

  • I think all of those lines are the Venu and he run in circles on this round track around the soccer field.

  • I agree with Pato. I’ve used many different software packages and hardware, and this is pretty accurate. Pato mentions 3-5 metres, but if you look at your results, it looks like you’re fairly consistently within 2m, except on that corner (unless your track is oversized - I’m assuming it’s not).

The only thing I’d express differently is that I don’t think you can switch satellite sets. I believe your watch will connect to satellites from GPS, GLONASS *and* (not “or”) Galileo by default. If you find I’m wrong, and it helps, that’s great, but if you’re getting frustrated trying to find how to switch satellites, this could be why.

  • You can change the satellite type in the settings of the activity. Choice is: GPS only, GPS + GLONASS or GPS + GALILEO.

  • My apologies, I found this same setting after I wrote my message above. My default is GPS + GLONASS (Reset to default today because of a potential batter issue after yesterday's update.)

Mladen T, you may be able to change from just using GPS to GPS plus one of the other services (I'm switching to GPS + Gallileo), but pato's original statement stands: your results are entirely acceptable for a small device like we're using.

  • Thanks to everyone.
I'll try with GPS+GAL as i don't remember it as an option when i first checked it(thought i could change only between GPS and GPS+GLONASS).

  • Smartwatch usually have problem with track running so this is normal. Garmin Forerunner series has special "Track Run" mode, that is optimizing GPS tracking on tracks, but it is not available in Venu series
