VO2 Max

I have a question about VO2 max.

I'm 39 years old (male) and my Venu calculates my VO2 max after various exercises around 40.  My GArmin connect app tells me that is a "poor" score and puts me in the bottom 40% of for my age and gender.  It then says my fitness age is 46.

However, other charts I consult has that score at average or above average, including Garmin's own page:

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/fitness/whats-a-good-vo2-max-for-me/

It isn't a big deal at the end of the day, and my VO2max score is on the rise as I continue getting more fit. Still, its a bit discouraging.

Any ideas?

  • Yeah I see what you mean.  According to that chart my VO2 max is excellent but in the App it says its only Good which annoys me lol.  I think the difference based on the very last part of that article might be that smart watches give “relative” VO2 max which takes other factors into account such as weigh as well.  Maybe that chart isn’t “relative”?  Seems quite the discrepancy though as the chart and explanation should match what the watch tell us.

I think the important part is that your VO2 max is improving and thats what really matters Slight smile

Hey!  Happy to look into this for you.  Can we have you double check your user settings in your account (you can use the link below) to make sure that your Garmin Connect account reflects your age correctly?  If it does, please let me know and I'll DM you for some more info.

Changing Device and User Settings in Garmin Connect

  • Make sure you enter your age( birthday) on your profile. Once I removed my age and VO2 max was showing different values.

  • Mine does the same thing, the charts show mine is “excellent” but Garmin shows it only as “good”.  And yes, my age is in there correctly.  Thanks.

  • When I go to Garmin Connect application to Menu> Setting> User> Setting> Birthday and click on Remove Date my VO2 max will change from excellent to good. When I enter my birthday date in those settings (not on the watch) VO2 max will change back. Check make sure you have your birthday entered there.

  • Having just checked my stats off the back of this post, I'd take it all with a pinch of salt tbh!

I'm 44, my VO2 max is 51, and apparently, my fitness age is 20 Joy

I'd say these stats suggest I'm a pretty good athlete, which is simply not the case!

  • Yes my birthday is in there correctly.

  • Try to remove your birthday and see if VO2 max is effected, than put it back. Also check settings for heart rate zones in your watch settings(you can do it from Garmin connect).

VO2 max doesn't change quickly. It took me 6 months to increase it from 48 to 51and hard work.

  • I removed my birthdate and it stays the same score no matter what birthdate I put in.  What changes is whether it says I am in “fair” shape or “good” shape based on my birthday and what percentile group I am in for my age.
