Is the sleep tracking really that bad on Garmin Venu?

Hi there,

I'm not the Venu owner yet but I'm close to buying one as my 3 years old Fitbit Ionic is slowly giving up and the new Versa is just not my style at all.
I love the look of Venu and I know it's probably one of the best fitness trackers out there. I workout 5-6 times a week. Weight lifting, HIIT, jogging - whatever I feel like on a certain day. I'm sure Venu would do an amazing job tracking all of my workouts and daily calories. However I've managed to find out that the actual sleep tracking on the Garmin devices is basically next to useless. Is that really the case? I mean, I'm a shift worker and I often go to bed at different times. Sometimes I will read a book for an hour before bed. Sometimes I'll just play a game on my phone for 30min before sleep. It's all just super random. My Fitbit had absolutely zero problems detecting my sleep, like zero zero problems. It's all always very accurate (as much as it can be on a wrist device) and it always knows exactly when I fell asleep and woke up. It detects my naps if I ever have one during the day. It's really good. I'm wondering if Venu will be anywhere near as good.
I like the Body Battery function on the Garmin devices but then again if sleep tracking is that bad how can the body battery be accurate?

I would really like to know if it's really as bad as some people say?

Thank you.

  • From my venu...my usual sleep hours are 22/6 but i fell asleep a lot earlier, few days ago. I woke up at certain time and venu recorded it pretty well.

Stages are really strange, in general, but i can't complain about basic recording(start time, end time and waking up during night).

Being relaxed with a low heart rate can trick many alghoritms and it happened also with my previous fitbit sense.

In general, i don't stay in bed before sleeping or after waking up and that's helping a lot.

  • I used Fitbit for over 5 years and switched to Venu since December last year.

I find Venu’s sleep tracking not a total disaster, but it’s nowhere near the reliability of Fitbit. It was my major concern before I switched also, but it’s all up to your point of view. I decided that, for me, the activity tracking upgrades from Venu are worth the sleep tracking downgrade.

For your usage, I would not recommend Garmin if sleep tracking is very important to you. Garmin sleep tracking don’t seem to support naps. Like not at all. Also any time you sit in bed idle after your “normal bed time” setting reading, gaming on your phone, etc will be recorded as sleep. This has gotten slightly better recently, but do expect that you will need to go and edit it in the morning if it was an extended session.

The latest sensor updated changed something with sleep tracking and my Venu now says I have deep sleep throughout the night, whereas prior to the update, it would usually only be at the beginning of my nights (that was the same on Fitbit as well).

Body battery is based more on HVR. I found it a decent reference.

  • Garmin Venu basically cannot tell the difference between motionless reading or TV-watching, and sleep.

It also cannot tell if one is awake for a while in the middle of the night, reporting it as Rem sleep.

It's really primitive and Garmin should fix it, as the device is still being sold.

Normally, I would buy the v.2, but instead, I am looking at other brands, and have started recommending against purchasing a Garmin. It will catch up with them.

  • Hi,

i was on the verge of buying the venu 2 until founding that post.
do you have other recommendations? (other brands)

which has the same elegant view and functionality (with good sleep tracking)

    thanks for sharing this,

  • You know that you're basing your choice on one random post on the web? I would do more researches or would just get one on Amazon and if i'm not satisfied i would return it.

If you are deciding between Venu and Venu 2 i would go with the second one as it's a lot more appealing than the first amoled watch from Garmin. It's like 2 different products in my opinion and i had both of them.

  • I've had the Venu for several months now and yeah, the sleep tracking is pretty bad.

I'm having to adjust the start/end points every single morning, which makes me wonder what good this sleep data might even be for? If I can't ever rely on its ability to figure out when I go to sleep or when I get up (including getting out of bed to use the bathroom, recording my steps, and then continuing to show me as being asleep), why am I wearing this thing to bed each night?

The Venu is a fine device for those things that it's good at doing. But sleep is clearly not one of them. Nor is Pulse Ox measures, nor is VO2 for the most part, nor stair/flight measurement... in short, it's good for step counting and pulse rate recording. And, if you set it up to your satisfaction, keeping track of your various workouts and activities and logging them to a web portal you can access/edit through various means.

In fact, I think pretty soon I'll give up on wearing it to sleep and just use that as a time to charge it up.

  • I don't remember it being so bad but in any case it's a watch from the "old generation" of Garmin as it is a Vivoactive 4 with a different type of display.

From Venu 2 onward it's the "new generation" with a new OHR sensor and GPS too(the difference between Venu and Venu 2 is noticeable when comparing the same route).

Many will say that also the "new generation" sucks with sleep tracking but i find it pretty accurate. Bedtime is matching with my Oura 3rd generation, clearly awake moments(getting up to drink water or to go to the bathroom) are recorded accurately and phases are completely different if i train hard close to the bed time or if i drink alcohol or if i had a relaxed day.

If you stay in the bed or you're doing something that lowers your HR a lot and you're not moving and you're within the sleep schedule then the watch can start to record the sleep also if you're not sleeping but it's something that happens with any watch...also with Fitbit that is, generally, considered more accurate for the sleep tracking(and i agree with that but i had wrong data also with Fitbit sense).

  • Just bought the Venu Sq. (Aug. 2022) The sleep tracking, after eight days, keeps saying I only have three hrs. or so of sleep.

Terribly inaccurate.....anybody got a solution? (In researching the problem, I believe I have done everything suggested.)

I infer there is no way to hit a "start sleep" option. The device is supposed to detect such.

  • Once in awhile if I’m up in the middle of the night for very long (an hour or so), it will show my sleep time starting after that but if I go in and edit the actual sleep time started it seems to fix everything.  Other than that I don’t usually have any issues with the sleep app.

What period of sleep does it show for you?

  • Hmmm....That's a help.....did not realize I could edit a given night. Just figured out how to so......I'll see how that works over a week or so. (I am not particularly invested

in getting this particular stat, but I rather like these devices to function as promised. Something close to accuracy would be appreciated...)

    Thank you.
