Venu general thoughts/opinions

I currently have a fenix 3 which I've used for years but it is getting a little bit long in the tooth now and I was thinking of replacing it with a Venu. I know that the Venu and the Fenix range are pitched at quite different users but ultimately I don't need a bunch of the functionality that the Fenix gives and so don't see a need to shell out for it.

I wanted to get peoples' thoughts/impressions of the Venu now it has been out some time. I have read a bunch of reviews online that seem to generally say it is a good sports watch with some ok, but not great, smartwatch features. So I wanted to get some opinions from people who have been living with a Venu for some time as opposed to online reviews which invariably are just short term usage opinions.

Overall, I am happy and would buy it again.  My previous watch was a Vivoactive 3 and before that a couple different Android Wear.  The only smartwatch functions I care about are notifications and how well it handles texts.  Both of those are very good.  Well, I also like being able to change the watchface and am very happy with the one I use.

I prefer it over a general smartwatch because I also use it for both exercise and officiating soccer.  Both of those require reliable and error-free event timing.  Sounds basic, but Wear watches can be quirky.  I can't worry about accidentally pausing or resetting the timer during a match.

I have only experienced one rather bad bug which is still unresolved.  I prefer to use the "Cardio" activity.  But, it consistently reports my heart rate well above actual.  I had the same problem with my Vivoactive 3 and that's partly why I upgraded.  So, I was very disappointed I still have the issue.

  • If you're used to the f3, make sure you look at the details of what things are available on the venu.  There are thinks you just take for granted on the f3 that aren't on the venu, like some of the more advanced running data.
