Two simple questions about AOD during activities and locked screen activation

Can anyone who has a Venu confirm these two points?

1) Does the Venu do the same "stick a great big padlock over the time if you activate the screen when locked" like the Vivoactive 3?

I've looked at loads of Youtube videos and no-one seems to lock the screen during them, which makes sense I suppose.

I have my VA3 set to autolock and once locked, it's a pain to see the time at night because I tend to touch the screen to wake it and then the huge padlock covers everything up. I ended up using a watchface with the time offset to one side so I could see it.

I know there's the always on mode but I'm more interested in what happens when the screen is touched when locked.

2) What does the screen show during an activity (cycling with GPS in particular)?

My VA3 shows a number of always on customisable screens which I can toggle through. Does the Venu have the exact same functionality or is it just a simplified AOD showing basic info?

Thanks for any help - Hopefully Black Friday might bring some discounts and I'll get one.

screens in activities are limited to 4 data fields. they can be any data you want.

Sorry, should have been clearer with my question. I realise that screens can show up to 4 data fields and that they're customisable.

My concern is that the OLED screen would mean that the display during a bike ride would be either off until a button is pressed or extremely limited.

With the VA3, the screens are always on, and you can have multiple screens that can be scrolled through. Is this the same on the Venu during an activity?

If there is an always on display showing 4 fields during activity, is the brightness reduced to prolong battery life?

I have my screen set to always on during activities. It gives you the choice so my screen is always on when I am training. Also the brightness comes on full when you flick your wrist. When I am lifting, the screen is very bright..

  • 8h GPS Hiking: 61% battery left. Always on disabled because i had panic ;)

3h GPS Hiking: 23% battery usage (77% left!!). AlwaysOn was enabled and great to see it the whole time. Beside, the Forerunner 245 needed 26%, so the always on is not the deal breaker.

In future, i will turn of AlwaysOn while long hikings, just because my panic the battery runs out. But i assume that is not needed. But while such days, i don´t need AlwaysOn, so no problem.

The brightness is reduced to a minimum and if you turn your wrist it gets brighter in dependence of sun light (more sun -> brighter).

    Here a comparison:

The short "hiking", compared with FR245:

    Long Hiking (around 8h ):

Battery time is awsome on the venu! And the battery killer is not the display in the first case and on very long units, it is no problem to turn of alwaysOn but on usual workouts and walkings, it is great to have it on ;)

Thanks for the images, they're really helpful.

It looks like the AOD will give me the same info as my VA3 on a ride, which is what I hoped for. I can live with approx 12 hours of GPS with AOD (based on your 23% useage over 3 hours).

Any comments on the lock screen padlock? Does it still exist and get in the way of the time?

  • I just tried it.  When the device is locked and AOD is off, the time will display as normal when you raise your wrist.  If you double tap the screen the time also displays as normal. If you press a button  you'll get a huge lock icon for a second or so then it will go to the watch face. If, while the watch face is showing, you touch the screen or a button, you'll get the huge lock again.  If you hold the top button the device will unlock.

    Thanks

Shame that Garmin didn't take any notice of the criticism of this "feature" on the VA3, I never understood why the icon had to be so large, intrusive and unmovable. It wouldn't be so bad if watch faces could choose to have the icon appear somewhere other than over the time digits.

  • I've never actually used the key lock on other Garmins.  I don't even know if it's on my 245.  So I can't compare, but it seems fairly unobtrusive on the Venu.  Unless you touch a button to turn on the screen, the lock icon doesn't come up at all.  And only when the watch face is already showing does it appear, when touching the screen and then only for a second or two.  But I agree that if you're in the habit of pressing a button to turn on the screen it's annoying.  I only got the Venu a couple of days ago so I haven't worked out a routine with it yet.

It would be nice to have that integrated with the watchface itself.  It'd be extra nice if Garmin would expand it's widget glance to be more like a drop-down shade that temporarily shows things like notification info and lock status so you're not dependent on a watchface dev to integrate that.
