Martial arts

I’m a martial artist and would love to see even a generic activity under martial arts. There are so many types of activities too like Kata, sparring, warmup, drilling. Wondering how to ask Garmin to upgrade and include this? Unless I’ve missed it somehow?

  • I totally agree, so many choices for activities and they miss out on martial arts...

Agreed. I usually just set mine for cardio. I was hoping for Martial Arts in the new Venu.

Totally agree about adding Martial Arts to activity types.

For currently existing choices - even if I use a chest strap - which activity type should I use to match the best possible for karate?

Is there anything close to that? Will be happy getting some reply.

    Absolutely agree!

A whole lot of sports, many different types of diving activities and even drone-flying (how is this a sport?), but no martial arts, not even boxing. In my opinion there are more martial artists out there than there are divers...

  • You'll note that many of these things are not available on the general sports watches.

what is it you want tracked that's not tracked by something like cardio?

have you checked the CIQ app store for an activity you might like better (maybe just using a different sport type other than "cardio"

if you can't find a CIQ app, have you submitted an idea for a new CIQ app? (here: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/f/app-ideas)

One thing that's come up in the past (something like this has come up in the past) is that during this type of activity you may not be allowed to wear a watch.

  • That's a good point but part of the problem is when you don't wear the Garmin, and add the activity manually, unlike Fitbit there's no way to estimate the intensity of the activity. Essentially, you add it in but it doesn't really count.

It did came up in the past regarding not being allowed to wear a watch, jewelry, etc. - it is absolutely correct.

The main reason is keeping yourself and people around you safe, however for kata and certain activities it can be allowed.

I got such a permission from my sensei for one or two times to get an idea about calories, heart rate, etc.

It was then when I realized that there is no matching activity type.

Futhermore, there is no problem wearing a chest strap for all karate activities, except sparring, connected to Fenix 5x via bluetooth, but there is still nothing to use with that dedicated to karate.

That's the reason I am asking about activity type as close as possible to karate to track my trainings.

    Thanks.

  • If you can't find an app in the store, I provided a link to the place to suggest a new CIQ app.

With a chest strap, you could run into issues with range, but might be able to use the "batched" HR available on the HRM-TRI and watches that support that (the venu doesn't)

    Thanks for that.

    I didn't understand :

you could run into issues with range

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

Now more than ever with (social distancingin classes) there should be a Martial Arts tracker, Kata or Pattern work, points sparring, non contact sparring, pad work, etc. Iam sure a lot of martial artists also train at home which is also non contact. I was so surprised when I bought my veno it wasn’t on there.
