Venu Sq - new but won't update to current software version.

Just set up my new watch, and the Connect IQ app tells me I need a software update through Garmin Express. I check for updates on the watch, no update happens, but software is version 3.00.

I can't seem to force an update with the Garmin Connect app (supposed to update automatically), nor can I update from the watch. Connecting to a computer is not an option currently. Every app is current (just downloaded), brand new watch, so I don't know why software wouldn't be current.

  • The SQ is in version 4.80 I think you will only be able to update if you connect it to the computer

  • About 5 hours after I posted this (a total of close to 8 hours after I started up the watch), the watch suddenly started prompting me over and over to run a series of updates until it finally got to the version 4.80. I didn't do anything and it had been working fine until that time, other than not letting me manually update software.

Maybe there's just a long delay when there are that many updates needed for a new device, but the problem resolved itself eventually.

Lesson learned: give it a day to update.

  • My 4.70 Venu Sq got updated on 6/9 from 4.70 to 4.80 which was released on 6/6.

However, when I bought the greatly discounted watch a few weeks ago, I did connect it to my PC and used the Express app to do the update from 3.00 to 4.60.

It took a few days, I forget exactly, to get the 4.60 > 4.70.

That said, my watch rarely stays connected to the phone for more than the few minutes a day it takes to sync.  I turn Bluetooth off to save battery level.

So, pretty good, all things considered and I think we can expect this quite acceptable level of service to continue for our SQs.
