Watch HR differs from Connect HR

Yesterday I was hiking and the heat got to me (I didnt feel well at all)  So I sat down on a rock in the shade. after the 1st minute or 2 I checked my HR on the watch and it was showing 142, I told myself when it hits 120ish I'll get going again. I drank, had a snickers and kept an eye on the HR, After about 10 minutes I felt better (but far from great) and the watch still showed about 125hr but I took off.  -- today looking on Connect my HR is no where near what the watch was showing at that same time/location - at the time I deceided to sit, Connect is showing 110, not the 140's the watch showed  and when I took off again Connect is showing 98, not 125..

The highest connect shows for this hike is 138 which is a totally different location than where I sat, and I know at other times the watch showed much higher than that

What is going on with this?

  • Hello, I notice the same thing with my Venu SQ, but my previous Garmin did the same. Sometimes, the HR values displayed on watch face are way higher than those registered at that time by Garmin Connect. I think the watch registers some "artifacts", where Garmin Connect then corrects it.

  • I had that thought too but dismissed it as there was no way at the time this was happening, that my HR was as low as Connect reported. While I was sitting i checked the watch extremely frequently and there is no way I just happened to see it every time it had a high " misread" -  I also often have a finger pulseometer ( but not usually when hiking) and the watch and finger are usually very close to each other so I really dont think connect should be "correcting" things especially a constant difference of 30+/-

I was just looking at the hike I did before the above one, I did not look at my watch but the HR on connect is def way to low for that- it was a pretty steep mountain I was heading up and i'm not in good shape. I literally had to stop every 15-20 step to catch my breath for a good distance ( prob 1/4+ miles in 2 different sections) - the max HR for those sections is only showing 99-125 averaging about 110  - I cant see anyway it was that low. ( I am 6'2 and 276lbs - my only "exercise" is 2x a week, a hike on sat and another on Sunday-- thats it, so I'm not in great shape! )

  • That is strange!  My only thought was I was wondering if you have auto pause turned on for that activity?  If so, it wouldn’t register your heart rate in the activity during the time period where you were sitting and resting.

  • good thought, but no I dont - Maybe next time, if I remember, I will also wear my finger pulseometer, it can record for a few hours-

  • Also, I’d do a soft reset before your next hike (holding down the A button for about 10 seconds until it powers off (past the emergency notification)) then power back on.  I do this each time after I charge my watch and find it gives it a clear memory and prevents odd things from happening.
