How do I get access to my music controls during an activity?

When I have an activity timer going on my watch my swipe over doesn't bring up the music controls. How do I get the music controls to come up during an activity?

    Hi, you swipe right during an activity then swipe up or down to your music widget and start the music.  After that, anytime you swipe right you’ll be at the music controls and if you swipe left you’ll be back at your activity.
