Battery drain on Venu SQ Music

Hello,

I picked up my brand new Venu SQ Saturday afternoon (first Garmin purchase). I put it on the same evening, doing all the process recommended by the app, delighted with all the features and the app. Today Monday I'm already quite disappointed by the unevenness of the battery life.

I charged my watch yesterday afternoon before going for a hike. No OX Pulse nor GPS, just the wrist heart rate.
Before going to bed, I had somewhat 80% battery life (which was a big drain in my opinion but still acceptable, regarding the activities).
This morning, only 50% left, I then decided to switch off wrist heart rate to optimize the battery (which is quite a shame : if I can't follow my heart rate with a 230€ watch, why buying one ?).
And at noon, it had dropped to 30% !!! I then deactivated bluetooth so that I even loose the phone synchronization and weather forecast and have a complete waste of money gadget.
I rebooted my watch but I'm still lossing 1% every 5 minutes !

What have I done wrong ? Is there something I can do ? I'm about to bring it back to the shop.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, 1% every 5 minutes is definitely not normal, 10-25% a day is depending on what functions are turned on. I get 6-7 days of charge off of my SQ (non music) and I do a workout activity 4 days a week, one or two with GPS on, I have both the haptic feed back and the brightness set to high.  I never turn off the heart rate.  I have email and text notifications turned on but not too much other than that. I never turn off blue tooth either.

The bigger battery drainers are having Pulse OX always on and of course even if its on at night will use more battery than not (which should be expected).  I just take mine on the fly while I’m watching TV, sitting still etc.  The always on display also will drain the battery faster.  I have bedtime hours on so the display and notifications stays off while I sleep.

If its new you might be playing with the functions more also?  Were you playing music through headphones on your hike? Obviously the more functions that are on the more battery gets drained at a faster rate.  I’d decide whats the most important to you so you have a balance between functionality and battery life.  3-4 days with more things turned on would be expected.

I have found if my SQ is acting up, for instance I was having a higher battery drain after an update a few weeks back then I do a soft reset.  You do this by holding down the A button for about 15 seconds until it turns off (past the emergency notification).  After a few seconds turn it back on by a quick press to the A button.  This usually fixed any bugginess I run into to.

  • Thanks for the answer. I processed to do several soft resets after that (I had already done it before writing the message, but it had not slowed the drain down).
After 3 to 4 soft reset, it seems that the watch would be able to withstand the use you're describing.
    Thumbsup

  • I suspect it's caused by the Connect app on your mobile being active and syncing the heart rate continuously with your watch. Don't leave the app running in your mobile. Kill it each time after using it.

  • I’m sorry to hear of the battery drain issues that you’re experiencing.  Let’s start by power cycling (turning off and then back on) your watch.  If the battery drain persists and if you have any Connect IQ (CIQ) Content, especially watch faces, you may need to delete that content until the independent developer is able to update their app/watch face to function correctly (without causing a battery drain) with the new firmware version on your watch.  You can use any of the 3 FAQs below to uninstall the CIQ content.

How to Uninstall Connect IQ App Content Using the Connect IQ App

How to Uninstall Connect IQ Content Using Garmin Express

If you would like to submit feedback to the developer of the CIQ content, you can do so by clicking the link below and searching for the download page of the CIQ content.  In the bottom right corner of that page, you will find the option to contact the developer.
