Erratic power readings

Hi, I've been seeing some really weird power readings from my new set of vectors. I unboxed them last week and took them out on a long ride. For the first two hours they were reading anything from 900 - 1200w, then for the next 2 hours they read 0w pretty much all the time, then for the last two hours they upped the ante and told me I was pulling between 1300 - 1700w. After a quick google half way through my ride, I did figure out that I could do a recalibration (zero offset) but on trying that multiple times from my wahoo elemnt I kept getting 'failed to calibrate' even though the bike was upright, stationary, pedals were awake etc. Also, at the end of the ride the L/R power balance was 88/12 which suggests a lot of the 'right pedal missing' issue widely documented on other threads.

I thought I'd give them a second chance so fired up my wahoo elemnt while my bike was on my turbo during a zwift session. At the start of ride the readings from the pedals were off the chart again, so I tried zero offset and after a couple of failed attempts, the pedals recalibrated and finally the power readings on my elemnt were showing the same readings as zwift was showing for my turbo....so I thought maybe that had fixed it, but then after a few mins the readings on my elemnt start randomly fluctuating. One minute they are showing the same as my turbo, the next minute the pedals are saying I'm only pulling 25w, and this seemed to continue for most of the hour on Zwift. One other thing to mention....when I looked at the L/R power balance during the zwift session it was 100/0. That is weird because this is the second set of vectors that I've had, having replaced the first set cos of the right pedal missing issue, but with the first set, when the right pedal went missing, the power was always about half of what I would have expected. During this turbo session the power reported by the pedals was often the same as my turbo was reporting via zwift, even though the L/R balance suggests only the left pedal was working!??!?!?!?

Note that with my first set of pedals, the L/R balance reported via my elemnt was always about 50/50 until they started suffering the right pedal missing issue, so I know this isn't some weird software thing with the Elemnt failing to display the L/R balance properly.

Any thoughts please folks/Garmin?

  • There are several things that are likely affecting you.

Firstly, after any installation or re-installation of the pedals you need to do a manual zero calibration at least once. This is because the automatic zero process will not apply a large offset correction, so that it won't inadvertently adjust your offsets if you happen to be applying a load to the pedal.

The second thing is that it does sound like you have intermittent battery contact. You should contact Garmin Customer service in your region to request a pair of the updated design doors. In the meantime you can pull the battery doors out and see if there is an obvious issue that you can fix, to get you going while you wait for the new doors.
