Cycling dynamics, L/R balance and Seated/standing data incorrect on SW v3.15

So I had the first triathlon of the season on Saturday and when I went back and looked at my data I have a couple issues.

First, under the cycling dynamics page I have no Power Phase info for the right pedal and the right PCO shows 0.0mm for the entire ride. This is not correct

Second, It shows that I was standing the entire ride with only 0:02 time seated. I was seated almost the entire time with maybe 30 seconds of standing hill climb time.

Third, my left/right balance is all screwed up. It's not terrible, but there are numerous spots where I have a 100% left or 100% right. If it can't read my power phase data or PCO info and the balance data is going to be all over the place, how can I trust that the balance or reported power is right?

Is anyone else seeing this kind of data? I'm on the Vector 3 3.15 Beta SW and recorded on a FR 935 SW v 8.0.0.0

I have attached a .zip file with my .fit file for the event
  • It looks like the right side somehow did not enable the cycling dynamics settings for this ride, which would prevent the reporting of PCO, power phase, and seated/standing. Overall power and balance would not be affected. I'm seeing the balance go 100% right or left in places where you momentarily interrupted your pedaling. In those cases you can end up with 100% one way or the other because your forward leg will register a significant positive torque while your rearward leg will register a negative torque.

Everything else in the data looked pretty good. We'll look into the cycling dynamics setting issue.
  • ahhh, that totally makes sense on the 100% left or right reading. Thinking back, I do tend to stop more with my left leg down when taking a quick stretch or break. I must be unconsciously pulling up with the other leg at the same time i'm doing that. It's weird that the dynamics did not get enabled on just the right pedal, I wonder if it is a function of it being a triathlon and powering the pedals up in the middle of the activity. I don't think I got a calibration or setting message on my FR 935 when the vectors powered on and connected(nor would I want one in the middle of a Multisport activity). I did connect and calibrate them when I was getting set up in transition.

I have never seen this behavior before on either trainer or outdoor rides, so the only new thing i can think of would be the event type.

From a purely functional perspective it had absolutely zero effect on my race. The only things I'm looking at during a race is power and cadence, both of which functioned perfectly. The pedals connected immediately when I started pedaling and I had no errors during the event. I didn't notice anything weird until I went back and looked at the data afterwards.

I've seen all the problems other people have been having, but really I can't complain. The pedals have functioned great for me overall and this is the first real problem I've had. This issue happened while testing out a Beta software version and was a pretty minor issue at that. I was just curious if anyone else has seen this or if it was maybe just a weird fluke with my particular setup and circumstances.

Thankfully Garmin has a great development team that is willing to look at an individual activity file and provide real world analysis and responses the same day that someone poses a question or has a problem. Not the kind of service I've seen or gotten from very many other companies.

I might try doing a Run-Bike-Run later this week and see if I can duplicate the issue. I've got several Indoor and Outdoor only bike activities that don't have this behavior, so maybe it is a multisport issue or a triathlon app specific issue.
  • Yesterday I received new pedals from the Garmin SAT and I tried it for 30 minutes indoor with the same problem. Firmware is 3.0. Today I will install version 3.15 to see how it works.

  • I have updated to version 3.15 and yesterday I went out to ride. 5 minutes after, I lost the PCO , etc, in right pedal. During the ride, manually I disabled the parameters and enabled again and it worked for a while. Another important thing is that I see an important imbalance. In the first pedals my left leg was the dominant one. With the new ones, it is the right leg but 46/54 seems too much to me. Tomorrow I will try the new firmware to see how it works.
  • Interesting. I am also seeing the L/R imbalance of almost exactly 46/54 to the right. It did not seem right to me either, but I have nothing to compare against. I might need to get a weight and see if the left and right pedal give the same torque measurement with the same weight after a calibration.
