WiFi and Connection issues for the Tech Dummy

My scale does not connect to WiFi and does not send data to GC. It did seamlessly a few months ago, but then all of a sudden it pretty much stopped working and hasn't worked since.

So much chatter on this forum of what is causing the problem and some viable solutions.

The problem is, I am not tech savvy and I do not understand most of the chatter that is going on.

What I would like is:
- Garmin can fix this problem on their side so that ALL USERS will not have this problem anymore.
or
- send out a STEP by STEP set of instructions that a dummy can understand on how to set your router or what I need to do to fix the problem.

  • richchin_tw something is broken with this forum and I can't enable PMs
If you post the make and model number of your router I might be able to give you some instructions if it is possible to do with your router.
Unfortunately not all routers support this type of modification out of the box, so I can't know without this information.

    Awesome! Thanks for replying.

My router is an Asus RT-AC88U. It is flashed with MERLIN and I am behind a VPN. I am currently living and working in China, so that is where the scale has been for the past couple of years. It used to be able to upload the data without a problem but then it just stopped working a few months ago. The data would not be able to upload. As described by candive01, will display my weight with the flashing wifi icon; the weight then flashes for a few times and the X appears. The weird thing is that sometimes, out of the blue, when I check my GMC, the weight and stats have been uploaded, but its usually much later in the day or maybe in the following next few days.

I have done almost everything as advised on this forum, restarting, re-syncing, resetting, etc.

The only thing I haven't tried is messing with any of the router settings, because I don't really understand how to do it.

I appreciate your replying and any advice or instructions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
  • bulletbilltm, thanks for coming to the rescue! :) You seem to be the subject matter expert in this area. Would it be possible to post a screen shot of your router DNS server configuration. Those routers that have the ability to apply this modification, must use the same or similar fields I suspect.

  • richchin_tw Merlin supports this through dnsmasq
    Instructions can be found here:
    https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/wiki/Custom-domains-with-dnsmasq

In the dnsmasq.conf.add file you should add:
    address=/clock.garmin.com/182.92.12.11

I got this IP address from "nslookup 0.cn.pool.ntp"
    Name: 0.cn.pool.ntp.org
    Addresses: 182.92.12.11
    173.255.246.13

Thank you! I will take a look and try to set this up when I get home this evening. Is this address dynamic and always changing? I just tried NSLOOKUP and this is what I got:

    Richards-MacBook-Pro:~ richardchin$ nslookup
    > 0.cn.pool.ntp
    Server: 198.18.16.1
    Address: 198.18.16.1#53

    ** server can't find 0.cn.pool.ntp: NXDOMAIN
    > 0.cn.pool.ntp.org
    Server: 198.18.16.1
    Address: 198.18.16.1#53

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: 0.cn.pool.ntp.org
    Address: 5.79.108.34
    Name: 0.cn.pool.ntp.org
    Address: 120.25.115.19

    Is this correct?
  • I have DD-WRT on my router. While I rarely (about 2 times in 4 months) have had a connectivity issue I made this change anyway.

    1) Check existing IP Address for clock.garmin.com
On PC go to command prompt (CMD) and type: ping clock.garmin.com
Should get a response address of 204.77.162.174
    Close/exit command prompt

    2) Change Router settings (DD-WRT)
    Login to router
    Go to Services tab
Scroll down to "Additional DNSMasq Options"
Enter the following without the "": "address=/clock.garmin.com/199.188.48.60"
    Click Save
    Click Apply

    3) Test that IP Address for clock.garmin.com has changed (note: if you re-use the cmd prompt window from Step 1, rather than closing it and opening a new one, the new IP address will not be returned)
On PC go to command prompt (CMD) and type: ping clock.garmin.com
Should get a response address of 199.188.48.60
    Close/exit command prompt

note: I use 199.188.48.60 which is the IP address for pool.ntp.org

I can't say I have noticed any difference after having made this change, which in my case is a good thing, as I very rarely had the connectivity issue. i.e. my scales still worked when I used them this morning

  • I work with DD-WRT, I also did the redirection with DNSmasq, the ping is ok. Still no connection! What are the options of your wifi?
  • 2.4GHz
    Wireless Mode: AP
    Wireless Network Mode: NG-Mixed
    Wireless Network Name (SSID): xxxx
    Wireless Channel: 3-2.422 GHz
    Channel Width: 20 MHz
    Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
    TurboQAM: Enable
    Optimize Multicast Traffic: Disable
    Explicit Beamforming: Disable
    Implicit Beamforming: Disable
    Airtime Fairness: Disable
    Network Configuration: Bridged

  • It's strange... even though my weight and stats don't look like they are being sent through (I get the "X" after weighing in), sometime later in the day when I check the weight stat on my GCM, it shows the most recent weigh in...

Now I'm a little reluctant to touch any of the settings...

    Any advice?
  • richchin_tw my advice would be, if it's working don't mess with it.
The IP addresses will change for the NTP pool, you could also try time.google.com.
It really doesn't matter as long as you are hitting a working NTP server.
