If not the Index scale, then which one?

Been looking for a Smart Scale and reading this forum, so the Index scale seems to not work well and is out. I've look at others but am not coming up with a clear winner both for hardware and software.

I'm using a Vivosmart HR linked to MyFitnessPal. I weigh daily and enter the weight into MyFitnessPal but am not tracking BMI or anything else at this point, because my scale doesn't calculate it.

I'd prefer wireless but will live with Bluetooth. I sync to a Samsung Note 4 but do most of my tracking (adding food etc) on the computer and not on the phone.

So what have people been using that connects easily, doesn't delete data and is reasonably accurate?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.
  • Hi.
I love my scale and the way it works with other garmin and garmin connect.

There is some issue with syncing to Myfitnesspal!! I have found a work around using my Fenix3 and garmin connect mobile (android) but it is not optimal solution.

    Get a Withings.

You can get the WS-30 if you're only interested in weight, or depending on how many (questionable) extra metrics you want you can go for the WS-50 or one of the new Body models.

Whatever you choose, Withings will sync the data everywhere (including Garmin Connect via MyFitnessPal) and it won't delete or lose your data!

I'm still surprised at how much Garmin managed to screw up the Index (inc. the Garmin Connect side) but the Withings just works.

    Thanks.

How is it for connecting without grief?

    Zero grief, just works.

I have mine in the room next to the WiFi router, so it's not the most challenging conditions but it has been faultless since I started using it.
  • Does the Withings scale transfer all the other metrics to Garmin Connect via MFP (such as fat%, water %, bone density, muscle mass etc) or just weight?

No, Withings doesn't sync anything to Garmin Connect other than weight.

I have the WS-50 that does also "Body Fat Percentage" and it will push this data to TrainingPeaks, but nothing other than raw weight figures make it through the Withings -> MFP -> GC sync process.

You can set up a free account on the Withings website, link your accounts and input some manual weight entries to see how the sync process works before you commit to buying one of their scales.

I was reticent to use yet another platform and service provider and hoping all the relevant data gets synced where I want it, but the reality is that the Garmin Index doesn't work reliably or sync to third parties, so for me, it's not even an option.

    felipe deliveries

Will it push all the data through to MFP?

Going to wait on a scale as I play with a new Polar strap. But might be a Christmas present one way or another.

I just checked on MFP and my Withings account is pushing the "Weight" and "Body Fat %" data there every day but only the weight gets pushed from there over to Garmin Connect. I don't know if that's the case with the Garmin Index too.

Edit: I should add the obligatory "I wouldn't bother with the extra metrics" note too, even though everyone ignores it. The "Body Fat %" on my WS-50 and reportedly on most (if not all) smart scales is just so variable it's hardly worth bothering with. The reality is that it's so hugely affected by your hydration that your going to have to be looking at massive changes in body fat to pick anything out from the noise. You're better off just sticking with measuring weight and the occasional glance in the mirror because unless you're realistically going to lose 10 kg of fat and/or put on 10 kg of muscle, these extra metrics aren't going to be telling you anything that you don't already know.
