WiFi and Connection issues

Hi...
I bought the Index a couple weeks ago.
First Impression - great.
Finally a scale that works with WLAN and the Garmin Portal.

After 3 days, it had a Problem finding my Router mornings, blinking, searching for the router.
I used my cell phone and checked the WLAN Configuration, everything was ok...exited the Settings and stepped on the scale again, the Scale worked fine.

3 days later the Same Problem, no internet connection...
Again i had to enter the Scales WLAN Configuration and exit the configuration (without changing anything) to get the scale to find the Internet.

2 Days Later...the same story
I tried the changing the Security settings (switched from WPA/WPA2 to just WPA2) in mey Router, still losing connection after 2-3 days of use.
I tried to use a different Access Point (Devolo WLAN 1200+), the Connection was lost the next day! Woke up, stepped on the scale and no internet. No Sync - even though i Setup the Devolo Access point the nicht before. the Access point works fine, my Cell Phone ist connected as well.

is this a Software Problem?
Anyone else having this problem?
The Scale is direct under my router, and the Devolo Access point was also an arm lenght away! Still losing the connection and no Syncing with the Portal

Anyone got this thing to work all the time?
Or am I missing a step in the Configuration.

Can anyone give me a tip?

Hello, I have a router dd-wrt, how can I do to solve the problem of DNS?
  • Is your dd-wrt providing DNS services for you? As you cannot manipulate the hosts file on the Index Scale you need to have access to a DNS server where you have the option to redirect any resolution requests for clock.garmin.com to the NTP server of your choice.

    I have these options

  • our Index Scale connects very rarely - frustrating (for 10 month); tried three different Access points (one exclusive for Index Scale) - no change...
    (but haven't tried the DNS-change for clock.garmin.com)

But how could this be - Garmin know's this problem since a long time and does nothing except selling this useless scale

  • After som heavy investigation I found out that the firmware v. 3.0 does not handle 40Mhz channelwidth on 2.4Ghz correctly. So once I configured my WiFi Accesspoint to use 20Mhz only (No channel bonding) my Index scale started connecting correctly. I also had to use the DNS trick with clock.garmin.com to get it to connect every time.

Encredible that Garmin doesn’t fix this... But that just goes to show how commercial a comany this is. Customers be damned if they are not selling it any more. They only go where the dollars are.

Well, I finally figured out what is the likely source of my Index SmartScale not upload due to this great post:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/health-fitness/index-smart-scale/123630-index-not-uploading-because-of-unreliable-ntp-server#post123630

I also confirmed today that both clock.garmin.com is offline:

    ? ntpdate -q clock.garmin.com [
    server 204.77.162.174, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000
15 Jun 16:28:01 ntpdate[51538]: no server suitable for synchronization found

    Compare to time.google.com:

    ? ntpdate -q time.google.com
    server 216.239.35.12, stratum 1, offset -0.000317, delay 0.07953
    15 Jun 16:24:18 ntpdate[51522]: adjust time server 216.239.35.12 offset -0.000317 sec

This issue has been known for over 4 years and Garmin has done zero to fix it. A screwed up NTP server would help explain some of the other issues I have seen.

It would be trivial for Garmin to point the index at a reliable NTP serve like say, time.google.com. This is ridiculous.

  • I believe using the own NTP server was done in Beta to reach a server in house and was since forgotten to change.
The other possibility: It is by design for tracking users. As long as you can count NTP accesses, you can see how many times the scale is awake. This is a number not correlating to successful transfers, especially with this nonworking system.
My opinion is still that at this time, its a rip off. Nobody is caring for the scale users, look at the last date of firmware update.
  • What we have to do to make Garmin DO SOMETHING about connection problem....a Classaction????!!!!!!!!

Just bought one. Tried every including adjust router setting / dns ... could not get data upload via my ASUS AC88U & Apple Airport Express.

Works fine on my iPhone hotspot though.

Please update the firmware to fix it.
  • I would recommend you to return it.
Garmin doesn't give a dime about it for over a year.

They just monitor this subform for language, but not for facts/problems/ideas/requests.
If you write an email to support, they need 2 months of internal research and then recommend you to set up the scale as a new device.
