WiFi and Connection issues

Hi...
I bought the Index a couple weeks ago.
First Impression - great.
Finally a scale that works with WLAN and the Garmin Portal.

After 3 days, it had a Problem finding my Router mornings, blinking, searching for the router.
I used my cell phone and checked the WLAN Configuration, everything was ok...exited the Settings and stepped on the scale again, the Scale worked fine.

3 days later the Same Problem, no internet connection...
Again i had to enter the Scales WLAN Configuration and exit the configuration (without changing anything) to get the scale to find the Internet.

2 Days Later...the same story
I tried the changing the Security settings (switched from WPA/WPA2 to just WPA2) in mey Router, still losing connection after 2-3 days of use.
I tried to use a different Access Point (Devolo WLAN 1200+), the Connection was lost the next day! Woke up, stepped on the scale and no internet. No Sync - even though i Setup the Devolo Access point the nicht before. the Access point works fine, my Cell Phone ist connected as well.

is this a Software Problem?
Anyone else having this problem?
The Scale is direct under my router, and the Devolo Access point was also an arm lenght away! Still losing the connection and no Syncing with the Portal

Anyone got this thing to work all the time?
Or am I missing a step in the Configuration.

Can anyone give me a tip?

Tim
  • New UK owner as of yesterday, getting intermittent X on updating. Wifi connection all seems fine, I am guessing this is the NTP issue people have talked about.

Unfortunately my Asus RT-N66U appears not to have any way of rerouting from Garmin NTP

I also have this router. I love it. Did you put Tomato firmware on it?

Unfortunately not, having owned this router for many years I have never had need to change the outbound routing. The problem now is that I don't really fancy reflashing a perfectly working and configured router just to get one flakey device to work.

I do however wonder if there is any way to get the Scales to use a different DNS so that I could use my PI to do the re-direct

You can, if there is an option to manually assign DNS for specific IP or MAC address.

I was wondering if it was something that could be setup on the scale itself if i selected manual as many devices will let you specifiy IP, Access point and dns in manual mode. As it took many attempts to get this device to sync and get all my users working I am loathe to reset and see what options are available and cannot find any documentation as to what options manual will offer. So I was hoping someone on this forum would have knowledge of this or maybe know where I can option fuller documentation.

There is nothing you can setup on scale regarding this problem. The problem is Garmin NTP (time) server unresponsiveness and the fact that Index Smart Scale just doesn't want to work then. Fiddling with router route to clock.garmin.com NTP server, you are tricking Index Smart Scale that it communicates with Garmin NTP server and in reality it communicates with NTP server you choose.

  • I raised a ticket with Garmin regarding this problem explaining that it will work about one in five times and that people have suggested it is an NTP server issue, I asked whever they have any plans to address the issue. I also linked this thread.

Almost unsurprisingly they claim NEVER to have heard of this problem and just gave me advice on how to connect the scales to my router as well as suggesting that when it does not upload I simply try again.

    Very poor standard response.

Garmin basically burying there head in the sand.

Unfortunately I have owned many Garmin products over the past decade or so (hiking, cycling, fitness) and whilst the products themselves are very good they never seem to get round to ironing all the issues out before moving on to the next bug ridden product. I maybe should look to switch brands but there isn't really anyone who seems to cover the market as well as Garmin.

I am not asking to be able to set the NTP on the scale, all I want to do is to be able to configure it's DNS. This is so that I can run a DNS on my PI which will be running it's own DNS which has the necessary config to redirect the Garmin NTP

I also raised a ticket and got mails procrastinating the issue. The "final" answer was the standard text block for wifi enabled watches. No word about the scale. I don't know why they had to "ask the developers" 2 months before sending this proof of fail as an reply.

You can't do that. All you can do, if your router has that option, is to give a scale manual network settings (IP address, subnet, gateway, DNS) and then to point DNS to your PI.
  • Thanks to those of you who worked out that the flaky and unreliable nature of clock.garmin.com is the cause of many problems.

In my case I am fortunate to have my own local DNS server (raspberry Pi) and a local NTP server (running on my NAS). I was able to manipulate DNS requests to clock.garmin.com on my DNS server and forward them directly to my local NTP server.

This bypasses Garmin's unreliable infrastructure in the early stages of the weight data uploading process and solved the issue for me.

I understand this option isn't available to many but include it in the hope that it can help some people experiencing this issue.

I find it amazing that a company like Garmin, selling high volumes of high-value devices around the world are unwilling to address this issue. It's sad but for whatever reason they appear to have decided that Garmin Index scale purchasers do not warrant support and will not allocate resources to address scale integration issues. This problem is easily solvable and I use the word 'unwilling' deliberately. I am sure an organisation like Garmin has the resources to address this - they just do not want to.
