Worth upgrading from Tanita BC1000?

Just wondered if there is anyone who has 'upgraded' their Tanita BC1000 to the Index and can recommend doing so?

Does the Index output the same metrics as the BC1000? - from what I can see it doesn't have metabolic age, physique rating, and visceral fat rating, unless GC calculates it externally?

I like the idea of the wireless uploads and the integration with GC/mobile, saves all the fuss of messing about with the 810 and then uploading to GC and the display, but is it worth it?
  • To be honest at the moment i would say no, i sold my Tanita 10 days ago and got the Smart Index Scale, BUT at the moment having issue with wi-fi router, i spend almost an hour with support at phone but we were unable to find a solution for the wi-fi (i wish they will improve the firmware and get IQ Connect app in order to use the scale also when outside wi-fi coverage since is ANT+, BT smart.....) and also you get less data than the Tanita BC-1000 provide
  • I would say yes. With the BC1000 I had to have my 910XT with me (which I do not wear as an everyday watch) and the 920XT doesn't connect with the BC1000 at all.

DCRainmaker has an excellent discussion in his review as to whether upgrading is a good idea. For me, having a no hassle morning routine of hitting the scale first thing and it instantly being uploaded to GC is well worth it.

As an early adopter, I had a nightmare getting the scale to connect to WiFi (see earlier thread). But at this point, many of the workarounds and ways to overcome roadblocks have been identified and posted in threads. Surely Garmin will address this in a firmware update to make things easier, but for now most connection problems can be user solved with the various suggestions in this forum.

Having said that, the age old adage applies: "If your Garmin product does not work to your satisfaction out-of-the-box, return it. Do not keep it expecting Garmin to make all features work through some update in the future."

I upgraded since my 910 is now damaged beyond repair and the F3 does not connect. For me the set up was easy on both the Garmin Express for my Mac and on the iphone.
Does not have all the features of the Tanita scale, visceral fat rating being one i would have liked to see.
The main thing i notice is based on the question i asked on this thread
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?341596-Question-on-lifetime-athlete-setting-compared-to-Tanita

I now notice the body fat % is not as accurate as it was on Tanita. I had this verified previously and was a very close match to the varying pinch tests (i know these can be subjective, but i had them completed by different people in different ways over time)

Overall so far i am happy with it and the updates are seemless

I needed a scale and took a while before deciding to go with this one.

Got it finally two days OK and seems very accurate on multiple readings in same place. However on GC it seems to just do one update a day, which I guess is no problem.

Connected up all fine so can recommend it and especially after reading Ray's site it is good for me, except no syncing to Training peaks :-(

All data except weight, such as fat%, BMI for any brand is just a guessing, they just compare you with your age, height, weight and the electric current feedback on your foot with others to give you those data. Some brand had different database apply to asian and westen. If you look at Tanita web it clear state which data they are using.

And about the once update per day, it is not correct, actually it will update each time, but there is a bug prevent it to update, or just update the weight. Funny is some time previous data get lost and I need to delete today measurement in order to get them back.

If your BC1000 still working then I will say wait until major bug iron out.

i am between 12% and 14% when measured, the Tanita would fall in that range also but the Index is 19%.
I will monitor over the next few weeks.

To be fair it is personal tracking so i can track to a new baseline. I know the Tanita scales would measure differently based on the settings which is why i was curious on the Index settings not having that option.
I know we can enter our activity level as part of our profile, mine is set at 9, which is accurate for me . Perhaps this has some impact?

Thanks for the replys. Think I'll hold out a bit longer until the bugs get sorted. I've been bitten with garmin products in the past that have been release to early in terms of firmware.
  • I also have the BC1000 and am wondering the same thing. Judging from the issue other users are having I will also wait a while.

Then again which Garmin product doesn't have bugs!

Exactly right. DCRainmaker said to take those values with a huge grain of salt. Seriously, do you really expect an accurate analysis of your body metrics from simply standing on a scale?
