Rechargable Batteries in Garmin Index

I am looking to puchase a Garmin Index Smart Scale and notice that the unit is reasonably heavy on batteries according to the specifications (4x AA batteries last approximatley 9 months). The obvious solution would be rechargable batteries.

The users manual (on page 2) says "Battery Type - 4 AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH, lithium, or precharged NiMH)" and then says "NOTICE - You must use 1.5 V batteries in this device"...

This is a contradiction - NiMH batteries are *always* 1.2V (due to their chemistry). I contacted Garmin and they didn't have an answer on the spot saying they needed to report the issue and suggested I just use alkalines which is clearly the 'safest' answer they could provide.

Does anyone know if NiMH batteries work in the Index?
