Big problem for myfitnesspal users.

Hi,

hopefully this is a temporary issue and I already contacted Garmin support.

The scale correctly reports the weight and additional information to Garmin connect, but the weight in myfitnesspal doesn't get updated.
If I then go in myfitnesspal and input my weight manually, this actually overrides the data in garmin connect and all the additional information (bodyfat %, muscle mass, etc...) disappears.

The only workaround i thought of for now is this:
  • weight myself a first time
  • go on myfitnesspal and input the weight manually
  • go on garmin connect and force a sync with myfitnesspal
  • weight myself a second time

Basically my new $150 connected scale is forcing me to do more manual work than my previous $50 Omron bodyfat scale.

Having said that, I'm hopeful that Garmin will fix this backend issue. The scale works well, and is super fast. The readings are similar to the Omron, so in term of bodyfat % accuracy they are probably very similar (I had a DEXA scan early this year and I found that my Omron was reading about 2.5% lower than DEXA)

But for now, if you use myfitnesspal linked to Garmin, this scale is a little of an headache...
  • Just noticed this myself, hope they fix it.
  • BTW Garmin support came back to me saying that I should disconnect myfitnesspal, wait at least 15 minutes and reconnect the apps, which I did. According to support this should fix the issue. We will see tomorrow morning...

Why is this a Garmin problem? My understanding is that Garmin doesn't push data to third-party platforms (Strava, TrainingPeaks, etc.), but rather they pull it using an API. It seems like your beef may be with myfitnesspal.

Not correct. If you log your weight manually in Garmin Connect, it gets updated in myfitnesspal immediately. It is only when the weight in Garmin Connect comes from the Index Scale that the problem appears.

Also, how would you implement the Garmin advertised "Full Circle of Wellness and Weight Management" if you cannot update the weight in myfitnesspal (updating the weight in myfitnesspal manually obliterated the reading of the Index scale in Garmin Connect)?

BTW, the suggestion from Garmin Support to connect reconnect didn't work...
  • Thanks! I'll try tomorrow morning. Yesterday Garmin support acknowledged the issue and said that they were going to reach out to the myfitnesspal folks and figure it out. Maybe they already did.
  • At least they can fix software. It would be nice to have it perfect, but this is a brand new product category for Garmin. Garmin has a history of software updates and fixing issues. Never as fast as we like but they do.
  • Yeah, still not working. This is what I ended up doing. It takes a couple of minutes (that is disappointing for an expensive scale that should do everything automatically "internet of things" style) and you need to have your computer with you:
    • Weigh myself once
    • Go in garmin connect and log the same weight manually (this updates immediately myfitnesspal, but deletes the additional information from Garmin Connect)
    • Weigh myself a second time

This double weighting procedure gets you the correct results. Pretty basic bug, if you ask me...

P.S.: I also filed a case with myfitnesspal on this bug
  • It worked 2 days ago but was a delayed reading, it stopped since. Then this morning 12/13, weighed myself and it was posted to MFP immediately. We will see if it continues.
