New to swimming & the watch

Hi

I'm new to swimming, a work colleague and I have been doing 2500mts/100 lengths before work. He counts the lengths, for some reason my mind wonders and I dont seem to be able to keep count.

So I bought the swim to keep tabs, and tried it out this morning. Normally, when counting manually, it takes us 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes, but this morning, according to the watch, I did 111 lenghs in just 1 hour 15 minutes.

Can someone spot whats wrong?

Thanks,

Rob
  • I'm not very familiar with the modern view - If you switch temporarily to classic then you can look at length by length what your times are etc. If you do that I suspect that you will see that there are some very short (in time) lengths. What stroke do you swim - I mostly swim crawl but do some breaststroke - normally the swim keeps accurate track but does occasionally miscount. Also pushing off is important and how you do your turns etc. Have a look in classic first - that might help you spot the issue

Thanks, I can see it now. I think I am lifting my arm to look at the watch mid-length, which is triggering the extra lap. It gets worse towards the end, as I was checking more often as I didn't think it was right.

Shame you cant see that in modern view....
  • There are some FAQs with tips for getting accurate swim distance, like this one. If you want to look at the watch during your swim, you should do so at the end of a length as you are turning at the wall.

In modern view, there is an "Intervals" tab under the charts. Selecting that enables you to see the length-by-length information.
