Missing my swim intervals, stroke type, stroke counts, swolf, etc.

I just did my first session with the Garmin Swim.

It's missing a ton of information. If you look at http://connect.garmin.com/splits/379131436 , you can see that all my intervals say "REST" instead of every other one. And there's no Swim Stroke. And there's no stroke count information. So there's no SWOLF chart.

I took a look at the TCX file on my Mac (~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Devices/<ID>/History) and indeed all the intervals are designated as REST and there's no stroke count data. So this is not a problem with Garmin Connect; it's a problem with the Garmin Swim.

Am I using the Garmin Swim right? I swim 10 laps, then I hit the pause button and the screen changes to say "REST #". Then when I'm ready to swim again, I hit pause again, and go. Is that not the way to do it? I know that during the swim, the detection is fine: it tells me the swim style. And when I check the watch's history, the intervals are there with the swim strokes: FREE and BRST.

(I just got this Garmin Swim. The system menu says that I have Garmin Swim ARV3.6 even though Garmin Connect page says that I have Garmin Swim, 0.3.0.0. Do I need a firmware update?)

Also, looking at the history, the total stroke count is way off: it says that I had only 9 strokes in the entire session.

And if I look at History > Totals, it gives me a distance of 0.10 km even though one of my sessions is 987m. Is the firmware just buggy?
  • The GC link to your swim data is broken, or I don't have permission to access it. But, I think the problem might be that you are using the TCX file instead of the .fit file. Try manually uploading your .fit file to Garmin Connect. You'll find it here: ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Devices/<ID>/Activities. The file name starts with the date of your swim yyyymmdd. I expect your data will look much better. Let me know if you need further instructions on manually uploading. Also, you can go in ANT Agent and enter your GC credentials so you don't have to manually upload. Do you want instructions on that?

Yes, it sounds like you are using the watch correctly in terms of how you are pressing Pause. The screen reverses to white text on black when the watch is paused to help you differentiate between the pause and swim mode.

The stroke count shown in History is the average strokes per length (with the watch arm). I don't know your pool size but I get about 10 strokes per length in a 25 m pool so a count of 9 is not unreasonable.

I hope that helps. Please post again if this doesn't address your concerns.
