Probably Garmin planning to use the LCD for a future FR60/FR70 replacement (i.e. a watch that could support running, biking, and swimming, indoors). Likely via speed/cadence sensors, a HR strap and a footpod.
At this point the icons are not use on the watch (nor are running or cycling modes available).
One bummer is that if such a watch were created, it would likely require a new purchase rather than allow for a software upgrade (even a paid SW upgrade option seems acceptable to me).
