Garmin Swim 3.6 Update - What is new? Couldn't find any release notes...

Anyone able to find it?
  • For those of you who have posted links to your swims and have experienced degraded accuracy for stroke type ID from 3.4 to 3.6, please check your Private Messages (under Forum on the top-right of this page).

I did not get a message, but of course I posted my links after you mentioned this. Any help with the stroke recognition would be appreciated as 3.4 was more accurate for me.
  • During these 2 training sessions my swim style was only free style.

I could imagine that: no relation to last update. I´ve been investigating among my partners in facebook and I am the only one who has this problem (the share icon is greyed out, not selectable).
  • Although the front crawl and breaststroke are identified correctly it can't quite make up its mind on back stroke !!!! sometimes its correct and other times it shows as breaststroke - probably about the same as 3.4 - as for fly.......

    Using 3.6 update for the first time;
    -lap counting worked perfectly
-stroke recognition is a mixed bag...
Breaststroke is off - around 80~90% of the time it said backstroke.
    Freestyle recorded properly.

Lap counting is the best thing about the watch. I rarely get errors. But, like you, the stroke recognition is AWFUL. Fortunately it's not a deal breaker. Still the best pool watch I've used... though it's the only one I've used so I'm hardly a great judge of the alternatives!

I just upgrade yesterday and I wish I hadn't. I've emailed support as I wan't to downgrade. I swam 1400m this morning and it counted 2000m. Normally I swim 4 x 500m and it normally gets it right with one or two additional laps counted than swam. This mornings result makes the watch useless. Segments swam were 500m = 650m, 100m = 100m, 300m = 550m, 500m = 700m. After this I switched it off and kept swimming. How can I downgrade to 3.4? My swim rate is 2.1 minutes per 100m, I don't stop mid length, only swim freestype, flip turns with a strong push off and glide......

  • Thanks for posting, Daniel, and including your Garmin Connect link. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Can you confirm what software you had before you updated? Are you sure it was 3.4? Very little changed between 3.4 and 3.6 for length counting so your report is surprising. Also, do you always swim in a 50 m pool?
    Thanks.
  • I originally reported that with the 3.6 version my breaststroke was being reported as backstroke. However in my last two swims the 3.6 version was 100% correct. Not sure why it's working now and wasn't before... I really didn't change my stroke.

V 3.6 Is an Improvement for me...

I am quite happy with the new V3.6 firmware. The previous version was very poor at recognizing my backstroke with about half the lengths being reported as breaststroke, but the new version has been 100% correct. The freestyle reporting has been right-on also with my pace of about 1:30 to 1:40 per 100 meters (LCM). Distance and lap counts have been very good, although it doesn't count laps of kicking (which I didn't expect).

I wear the GS on my left wrist with the face out, fairly snug. I am right handed and breathe to either side or bi-laterally. I do flip turn and/or open turns, but have not noticed any degradation with either.

Taking a clue from others, Garmin ought to consider making selection of the software version at the user's option to achieve the best stroke recognition for the individual user.
