First Swim First Impression

Got it from the Post Office and headed directly to the pool after a quick look at the quick start manual. It's not as intuitive as I thought but it seems to be one of those devices that you use once or twice and you've got it down.

My first lap never got recorded as I thought I turned it on and I didn't. Finally got that figured out and swam and a couple of observations. I occasionally check the device and I think it isn't counting right. By my count I have 1600 meters. The Swim shows 1000 while I'm in the pool. I get out and save the interval (s) because I paused once and sure enough it counts 1600 meters. I don't know if it counted it after I got done or it was from the two intervals, but anyway it seems right.

When I dumped the swim into Garmin Connect it showed up with the first two laps really fast. I promise you I am not that fast. I did some goofy stuff on the first two laps so lets chalk that up to me.

The rest of the swim looks good and the readout adds up to 1600 meters with fairly consistent times, I guess. I just flail away for exercise. I'm not super super serious.

All in all I like the device. I generally like to swim a mile somehow or another with no real goals other than exercise. Nice to know how to get there and nice to be able to dump data in to Garmin Connect and fill up the calendar holes for my swim days.

Downloading into rubiTrack however the date showed up at December something 1989. I am in Tokyo time zone and see Garmin updated ANT agent for this problem but my Mac software says I'm up to date.

I found something regarding the 1989 date. I followed the instructions on the link below after "un-pairing" with the ANT Agent. It still imports the wrong date for my swim today but I figure it is because that file already got dated that way. I'll check it after the next swim in a couple of days. Anyway if you live in another time zone it would do you good to pair your device according to these instructions.

2nd swim is completed. The 1989 date thing is now fixed as per my post above.

Somehow or another my swim dropped one 50 meter length and the stats for the first 6 lengths just plain old ain't right. That being said I really long for two stats. Distance and time. A deficiency of 50 meters over a 1600 meter swim is more than acceptable to me. Stroke and SWOLF are cool to look at on a graph but I'm just out burning calories and logging exercise.

I'm hoping firmware updates will tighten things up a bit but my initial thoughts after 2 swims are that the data is good enough for me and the Garmin Swim is a pretty cool device. It is nice to not have to manually input swim data of which before I only knew one thing.....time. Time give or take a couple of minutes. My goal is pretty much to go out and swim a miles worth of laps. With the data I have and can feel pretty confident that that is exactly what I am doing.
