Garmin Connect data / Swim Graph interval times

On the Swim graph, interval times are reported twice: once at the top and once in the middle of each interval bar. In some cases, the time in the middle is 0.1 sec greater than the time at the top.

Can the Garmin team please confirm if there is a reason for this? Which time is correct? Thanks in advance.

I think that my earlier explanation could be better. I'm sure this must be happening to all users, not just me. If you look at the Swim Chart, you will see that each interval is represented by a vertical rectangle. The top 25% of the bar is black and the lower 75% is coloured depending on stroke type. From the top down, the text in the rectangle says; Interval number, then time taken. Next, inside the lower part, it gives the time in larger text and then states Length number.

If you take a look on the left side of the screen, where the summary table is presented, it is Interval time and not Lap time which is reported.

In most cases, the values are within +/- 0.1 seconds of each other, but today, I had an Interval time 0.3 seconds longer than the corresponding Length time. Please see interval 1 of the attached workout: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/260090306

Can someone from Garmin please explain why this difference exists?
  • The short answer is that I don't know right now why this difference exists. I do see the 0.3 s discrepancy (thanks for the clear explanation) in the GC link you posted. I took a quick look at some other data and didn't see the same problem, but typically an interval contains more than one length so I was comparing the Interval time in the Swim Graph to the interval times on the left, not the length time in the Swim Graph. (In the workout you posted, it seems you pressed Pause at the end of every length. That doesn't explain the 0.3 second difference, it is just somewhat unusual.) Some more digging would be required to get to the bottom of the 0.3 second difference.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did pause at the end of almost every length. I was working on my form and wanted to have enough puff to be conscious of each movement I made, so I took a breather at each end.

You're quite right that the discrepancy would be a non-issue for someone swimming longer intervals.

In each swim session, I notice a few discrepancies and they tend to be around 0.1 second. As long as the gap was this small (and the smallest unit reported was one tenth of a second), then I wondered if this occurred due to decimal rounding off. This wouldn't explain the 0.3 sec difference however...
