For some swimmers, butterfly is detected accurately however it is true that this is currently a weakness in the stroke type identification that the team is working to address. There is some further discussion about the challenges of stroke type identification in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?29400-Inaccurate-distance-and-stroke-style.
The same problem is here and I assume not a lot of people swim Butterfly, so not a lot of complaints.
The answer is a little bit vague:
What does it mean "For some swimmers, butterfly is detected accurately"?
What is the detection success rate for Butterfly?
Who they are: pro, semi-pro, amateurs, beginners?
Should I change my swimming style to adapt for Garmin Swim?
Is it worth doing something, or just wait for next firmware release?
I've been swimming with the Garmin Swim for a few weeks now. I regularly do 1000+ yards of IM work and the watch rarely identifies butterfly. Maybe 1 length out of 20 will identify correctly.
I updated the firmware 2 nights ago (10/25) and the stoke detection for backstroke and breaststroke have actually gotten a little worse.
As for distance the watch is spot on.. I haven't noticed any missed or added lengths so I'm happy there!
