Endless Pool Mode

Just raising this topic again as it seems to be something Garmin are once again ignoring Disappointed.

I swim in an endless pool. Currently I use drill mode to record my intervals, this seems to be the only accurate way to track my distance. BUT I dont get stroke rate, swolf etc when using drill mode.

Please, can Garmin look at this. After lock down so many people are using tethers / endless pools - surely I’m not alone???

I do not think so - the solution is simple and well known: use the OW Swim activity for the endless pool, with the GPS option turned off.

  • I e tried this but it’s no good and it doesn’t record distance and you can’t manually input it afterwards.

I build a set in my endless pool app - say 10 x 250m or any set with rests,

open water mode won’t handle this.

You can enter distance at OW Swim without problems. And if you calibrate the watch at a true OW Swim with GPS, it will record distance automatically from the stroke cadence, too (at least at recent models, not sure about Fenix 5)

  • Yes you can record overall distance but not intervals.  I want my interval sessions to record my stroke rate. But using drill mode (which is by far the easiest way to enter individual interval distances) your stroke rate is not recorded.

  • Try doing a true open water swim with the GPS on, letting so the watch calibrating your stroke rate and distance. If the F5 supports it, you will then have the distance in the endless pool too, and you can tag intervals with the lap button, to have the interval stats.

  • Apologies but I d t have an F5 - I didn’t realise this tread was specific to that model. I have a  935 and sorry but pen water swimming at the time of year is not on my agenda!!! Too cold!! I’ll just carry on with what I’m doing. I’m toying with buying the Epix and just wish the drill mode could capture stroke rate.

  • JFYI, I just did a dry simulation of the endless pool swim using the OW Swim profile without GPS. I simply stayed in my room, and simulated the strokes dry. I also tagged 3 Intervals with the lap button - all of it is correctly recorded in Garmin Connect, including the pace, times, HR, strokes, and intervals. I am using the Instinct 2 watch.

Just a side note: my Instinct is not perfectly calibrated for the swim right now, because the last few times I went to the sea, I was rather using the OW Swim to record my snorkeling, so the pace is skewed in this dry test. The test was made just to demonstrate it does work in the expected way.

  • Ok - I’ll give it a go again but last time I did this it wasn’t accurate at all. Thanks.
