Watch didn't record GPS track during triathlon

I recorded a triathlon (Tri Santa Cruz) today on my Forerunner 935 and was very disappointed to find that it didn't record any GPS track. Angry The times, heart rate, and other sensor data are all present and correct but no GPS.

The watch is running the latest software version 21.00 with GPS version 2.70. There are no extra ConnectIQ apps or data fields installed. I synced the watch with my cell phone before the race so it should have had current satellite ephemeris data. I pressed the Start button in the corral several minutes before my wave started and verified that it had a GPS lock as indicated by a green circle around the watch face.

Could anyone perhaps take a look at the attached FIT file and let me know if there is any way to recover the GPS data? As far as I can tell it seems to be missing but maybe there's a way to fix it?

  • Thanks for checking. I don't think it's really bricked. I upgraded that device to software version 21.00 when it was first released, and have recorded a number of activities on it since then. Most of the time I wear a different watch (Descent Mk2) but still like to use the Forerunner 935 for races because it's smaller and lighter. I recorded another triathlon back on March 6 and it worked normally. Haven't changed anything since then. I just recorded a short test Run activity in my driveway and the GPS track is correct. The About menu does show GPS version 2.70.

  • Well I know exactly what you feeling. It's sad because we trust the equipment, we trust in the brand "Garmin".

I'm using F935 for the last 3 years, it was everything doing well, but this year start bad. It's everything updated, my profile is ok, but even so my bike rides does not record GPS data.

I did eveything they say: reviewed my profile (Account settings, Activity Name must be "Location & Type"), battery full, GPS+GLONASS, started the activities only after GPS states ready... everiything, and no GPS data.

I'm about to create a new profile, reset my watch, export all my activities and import on the new profile, it's really frustrating.

  • Restart the watch, I never heard before. Sure I'll try.

When you say delete the folders ACTIVITY, REMOTESW and NEWFILES... is it to delete the folders or just clean up their content?

Looks like I did not do "everything"... Thanks OnlyTwo.

    Thank you so much!

  • I appreciate the suggestion and I know you're trying to help, but it really shouldn't be necessary to do that kind of manual system administration on a watch just to make GPS work reliably. I mean come on. Garmin needs to do better on software QA, and at least implement some kind of sanity checking or show a helpful error message when it isn't working correctly. Do Apple watches need to be rebooted frequently?

  • @nradov                 it happened   to me too with 935: I ran several times without GPS track. I powered off the 935 and the next time the GPS track was there .... did you power off and restart the 935 ? if you download the fit file you can see if there are any gps inside with developer.garmin.com/.../
