Should I buy new 935 for triathlon?

Hi guys,

I own Garmin 245 music but since it doesn't have triathlon mode, I am thinking of buying new 935, or maybe coros pace 2. I don't use any of the fancy features, all I need is ok battery life and good gps tracking.. I know 935 is old watch, but would it still be ok? There's a big price difference between 935 and 945 so don't think I should spend that much more.. Did anyone maybe try both 935 and coros?

Thanks

  • I own a forerunner 935 but if you don't need navigation you should buy a coros pace 2 over an 935. Without a doubt. It's cheaper, has better batterylife, and more than enough features. (I use navigation a lot, so the pace 2 is out for me)

On the otherhand. What hope you to gain with buying a tri specific watch?

You say you are not interested in fancy features, so swimdata, runningdata and cycling data are not needed (and not very interesting anyway). All you want to know is how much time swimming took, running took and biking took. You could do that with laps. (and hitting the lap button right after swim and again just before biking you also know how much time your transitions took)  Sync your data to garmin connect and/or strava and adjust the activitytype there and all is fine.

Really no need to spend money. But that's my 2 cents.

  • tnx for answering :) well, I don't need maps for sure.. I'd like tri specific watch for easier race logging and to see some data after the race, but I don't need all that Garmin features because I don't use it on my 245..  Maybe wouldn't replace 245 at all, but it's damaged and almost 3 years old.

  • Fair enough. In the end there isn't much difference anyway. Most people just collect the data their watches produce. And with garmin you could collect slightly more data. I'm with an athletics club with some people competing at national level and very few actually use the data their watches produce to alter their trainingplans. Most look at the data and don;t do anything with it.

If you thing it's convenient for transitions to have a tri function then that's a good point to buy a new watch.

For me, I do a lot of trailrunning and follow gpx tracks quite a lot. Navigation is the killer feature for me. (the breadcrumb style is good enough)

In the end, the best way is to look at the must have features (which are very little of) and choose the one you think is pretty and can afford.

  • To be honest, I own both, a FR935 and FR945.

But when I go for a run, whatever it is, I always take the FR935 while the 945 is more of a daily wear and sleep watch.

Why? The points below are only my very personal observation and may be different for others:

    • the FR935 has a drastically better battery autonomy
    • the GPS accurracy is considerably better on the FR935
    • comms link with my HRM-Tri cheststrap is more reliable on the FR935
    • the SW on the FR935 has really well matured and meanwhile is rock solid at least for my usecase

So please take these with a grain of salt. It's just my personal view and not a general statement.

  • my 935 watch stop working the gps suddenly like a planned obsolesnce. If I'm you I will not buy it....

  • My 935 did the same only 3 weeks ago! Suddenly no GPS (position saved). A simple hard reset of the watch and it returned to normal operation.

  • I tried to do hard reset like 10 times already. I did al the test possible and not luck. desperate to resurrect the watch
