935 - still a good buy in 2021?

Hi,

looking at huge discounts for the 935, I would be able to get a new one for 240$.

The Watch has all the functions I need:

- Multisport / Power meter reading / performance analysis etc

I dont need:

- Music / Pay / Maps ...

I do not use activtiy tracking, would switch off wirst HR and use only a belt during sports, etc So loads of additional stuff the 945 offers is not relevant to me.

Is the 935 still a good buy? The price is great and alternatives like the 245 dont offer bike functions and power meter readings.

I am mostly worried about the battery - laying around in a shelf might not have done good to the capacity?! or are modern batteries not harmed by that?

Is there a way to find out the health of the battery? Thanks a lot

  • Like you said, feature wise a 935 still is a good watch and a match for your requirements.

Although I would leave the wrist HR on and use a cheststrap during sports. That way you rest heartrate is monitored. It’s not perfect but some indication of your current fitness and warns you, you might get a cold when it suddenly increases or when you rest to little for your current traning load (although that last one is still debated in scientific research)

Batterylife is an issue.  Normally a battery wears down by charging but I also don’t know the impact of leaving it without charging for a long period. Don’t know in which country you are in, but in Europe we have quite good consumer protection. I guess you could always try to make a deal that you are willing to buy but only if the batterylife during gps activity is still 20+ hours, or so.

My 4+ years old 935 has only 10-12 hours gps usage left. Which is kinda annoying, now I’ training for a marathon (funny enough my previous Suunto Ambit 3 got only 10 hours of gps usage, when it was new and when it was 3 years old. Somehow Garmin uses lesser batteries, or some bug was introduced in the firmware.)

And one, last thing: if the firmware of that watch is version 12 or so, don’t update! Things didn’t become any better after that.

  • Hi,

thank you for your reply. I bought the watch and took it for roughly 5h bike ride with GPS navigation on, all kind of sensors and radars attached.

The ride took 28% off the watch, I guess that is a good battery effort.

I think I will keep it. The firmware was 19.something and got updated right away.

So it seems the watch must have been produced not do long ago.

  • Good to hear. I’m sure you enjoy the watch at least as much as I do

  • I've been searching for a reason to upgrade to the 945 or the Fenix6s and quite honestly, I've not found one. The battery lasts a week with 4 or 6 GPS workouts which is fine, and I don't use all of the functions as it is. Like you I don't need music or payments. I would like maps, but my eyes are a bit rubbish and I don't run with specs so I'm happy with the breadcrumb trail and pre-planned routes on the phone. It is a great and very reliable watch I have found. I think I'll only upgrade when dual-frequency GPS comes along which can't be long.

  • exactly my view. went for another ride of 4,5h with all sensors and radars attached, GPS navigation on: battery drain is between 5-6% per hour, better than my Edge830.

I will keep the 935 and am very happy

  • same, ive had the 935 since release. Maybe the 955?

I like the new watches feature but i want to keep the great battery life of the 935 for example and the later is more important to me. Things i'd kinda like on top of that:

    - wireless charging

    - better notification management (but that should be done by the phone app)

    - mtb project integration

    - terrain view of maps
